Resumen del Editor

“Dispute in progress, lethal weapons involved.” Deputy Pegasus Quincy takes the call to resolve violence on a Friesian horse ranch in Arizona.

Intent on his own personal vendetta, partner Shepherd Malone refuses to declare a murder in a fatal fire at the ranch. Peg unwisely circumvents the law to investigate anyway.

Two families feuding over water rights, a Gypsy clan suspected of drug dealing, and a blackmailer on the loose, all lead Pegasus astray on her quest to find the killer in a desert mountain town beset by flash floods and arsenic-laced creeks.

When Peg refuses to stand down, the Water Wars turn deadly, and she becomes the ultimate target. Can she stop the killer before more lives are lost - including her own?

Enjoy this fast-paced thriller of the American West.

Book 3

This is book 3 in the wonderful series. I started this series on book 5 and liked it so much that I wanted to read the other 4. Each book I have read could be a stand-alone book. I do enjoy seeing how Peg's character developed over the series. I also have to say that Amy Otteson is wonderful as the narrator of this series she has the perfect voice and reading style for this series. One more book for me in the series, I will be sad for them to end and will hope that Lakota Grace writes more.

Good story

This is the 3rd book in a series. I did listen to the books in order but each one can be read as a stand a lone. I did not guess the murderer correctly . I did receive a free copy from Audiobooks Unleashed.

Book 3

A police procedural, especially enjoyable to listen because the characters were well developed and realistic picture of day to day police work

Pegasis Quincy Mystery

I loved the characters in this book and the sub plots that all come together in the end. I did get confused at times but other than this it is a great listen.

Great Rural Police Procedural

I am a ardent fan of Police Procedurals and seek those that focus on the detective, deductions, and investigations rather than the personal faults and concerns of the characters. In other words, I do not like "cozies.' This author writes a finely detailed, highly credible story that fits perfectly in its rural setting. There is no suspension of belief needed to feel these events actually happened. The protagonist is likeable, well-meaning, and dedicated if somewhat of a novice on the job yet believably handles a complex murder case.

Personally, I did not feel that the Reader displayed the usual level of professionalism to which I have grown accustomed in Audible's books. That was especially true during the first few chapters. While I realize it could be that I grew accustomed to her voice characteristics after a number of pages, I believe that the Reader was actually learning as she went and indeed objectively improved. Early on in particular, her intonation and tone were sometimes flat or almost without expression, which is something that happens when a reader is pronouncing the words as they are read rather than reading with the eyes a word or two beyond what is actually being spoken, a hard to learn skill that also improves pacing and phrasing. That the Reader's voice has some unusual characteristics is not in and of itself necessarily a detriment, because the reader becomes the voice of the character, whose manner of speaking simply becomes that of the reader..

Another oddity is that while this book "Fire" was presented as the first in a series, the story told in this book clearly takes place after the events recounted in the book described as the second, "Blood in Tavasci Marsh.". For example, the protagonist is already a Family Liaison Officer (FLO) in this book, but is "promoted" to that position in the "Marsh" book and the Reader's performance in "Marsh" is much better than in "Fire," suggesting that maybe "Marsh" is the first in the series but was recorded after "Fire."

Anyway, both were well worth the read and I will be purchasing more because they are right up there with the Posada County series by Steve Havhill, which is my all-time favorite in this genre.

Very entertaining police story!

I enjoyed this police story set in Arizona. Pegasus Quincy...aka Peg...is quite an interesting character. Her inner monologue is hilarious. Peg is a Family Liaison Officer, who is juggling investigating a murder, comforting the grieving family of a suicide victim and finding a new home for herself and her Coon hound, Reckless. Love Peg’s snark! The book is well written and keeps you engaged. This is a new-to-me author and I look forward to more of her work.

Great narration of

FIRE.IN.BROKEN.WATER
...Lakota.Grace
Amy Otteson..narration
Peg a liaison officer, investigates a murder, trying to console a young girl, and has a coon hound, she adds so much to this story. Family feuds, drugs, blackmail, and the patriarch of the family is a grouchy person. It is intriguing, and unusual plot, with a lot of disputes and twists going on.
The audio narration by Amy Otteson was great, she added the right touch to this story.

Fire in Broken Water

Still considered to be the rookie, Peg continues to gain experience. She’s involved with multiple cases, but the big mystery surrounding the fire and death of the ranch worker takes most of her time.

I really like how Lakota Grace has created realistic characters. I can’t help but root for Peg to be successful.

Amy Otteson was well done.

Worth the listen

This is a pretty good mystery. It's well-paced and suspenseful. But chronology is somewhat muddled throughout the story and it's a bit jarring to have some piece of information mentioned for the first time that should have been disclosed earlier in the story.

Amy Otteson has become the voice of Pegasus Quincy, and she does make an effort to give distinctive voices to other characters, but too many of them sound the same and her accents miss the mark altogether. Nevertheless, her performance is acceptable.
