How much do you really know about the FBI? Do you know who the FBI is? Do you know what the FBI does?
This manual debunks FBI myths and misconceptions for those who read, watch, and write crime dramas about the FBI or have always wanted to be a Special Agent. Like most people, you've probably learned about the FBI from popular culture - reading books and watching TV shows and movies, along with, of course, the news. You might be surprised to learn that a lot of what you've been reading and watching is inaccurate.
Written and narrated by retired Special Agent, crime novelist, and true crime podcaster, Jerri Williams, FBI Myths and Misconceptions: A Manual for Armchair Detectives debunks 20 clichés and misconceptions about the FBI, by presenting educational reality checks supported by excerpts from the FBI website, quotes from retired agents, and reviews of popular films and fiction featuring FBI agent characters.
This informative and fun manual will help you:
- Create realistic FBI characters and plots for your next book or script
- Impress your armchair detective friends with your knowledge about the FBI
- Prepare for a career in the FBI and avoid embarrassing yourself at Quantico
This audiobook is an excellent reference and FBI career guide.

Jerri Williams, a retired FBI special agent, jokes that she writes crime fiction in an attempt to relive her glory days. After 26 years with the Bureau specializing in major economic fraud and corruption investigations, she called on her professional encounters with scams and schemers to write her Pay to Play and Greedy Givers, in her FBI Philadelphia corruption squad series. FBI Myths and Misconceptions: A Manual for Armchair Detectives was inspired by her true crime history podcast FBI Retired Case File Review. You can find out more about Jerri at jerriwilliams.com. Having said that, this is a useful, as her subtitle states, “manual for armchair detectives.” Instead of listening to numerous books from former agents and gleaning details about FBI structure and operations, Jerri Williams makes a lesson of it.
This book is narrated by the author. As a former spokesperson for the FBI, I would expect her delivery to be smoother, but it works. It seems a bit slow and stilted, but unlike some other author-narrated books, there was never a cringe-worthy moment.
