John Evermann’s world never changes. He goes to the same assigned job every day. He lives in the same house his family was placed in years ago. He picks up their weekly rations on Friday and watches the same federally approved news broadcasts every night after dinner. Everything is as it is dictated to be, from the number on the back of his work jacket to the permanent curfew that keeps everyone safely indoors. Everyone has what they need to survive, and everyone contributes. It’s a perfect life, for some. It’s not enough for John and his friends.
America is torn apart from civil war after the rise of a tyrannical president. The Republic of Texas lies to the west, a shining beacon of freedom. When the most radical authoritarian policies are passed, some states followed Texas into secession, clinging to the legacy of the Founders. That is where John looked for the future of his family and the friends who came to rely on him. A land of choice and liberty. A place where his children can grow up to be who they want, not who they’re told. They just have to get there.

This was an entertaining read / listen. The story was family friendly, easy to listen to, and easy to follow. Not a lot of rabbit holes or things that jump out at you from nowhere. The writers perspective is clear but not overly heavy or over dramatized. I found this to be a good listen and worthy of the time spent to share in the story from the writer. I would recommend this book for most listeners.
If you are a die-hard blood and guts, end of the world fan, this may be a bit too "normal" for you with too little gun play or excessive violence.
If you a person that feels that the government is here to provide for us from cradle to grave and correct all the injustices of world, then take a hard pass on this book (unless you are willing to re-evaluate your choices).
For those who want their liberty but all the perks from social programs, this is your opportunity to see where that leads.
For others this is a "Who didn't see that coming?" story like has been seen throughout history where the greatest evil has always been done in the name of the greater good.

I listen and enjoy books from authors all across the political spectrum (though I admit to leaning left in my own views.) However this 'story' has a main character who is a Mary Sue, uses certain talking points to beat you over the head like a club, over and over. We get it, society helping people is evil, we're all better if we pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. People give to those less fortunate of their own volition.
I'm working hard not to put snarky political points in this review, so I'll finish with, if you believe government is always evil, you'll enjoy this book. If you believe society exists to help those who need it, find something else.
I received a copy of this book at my request in exchange for a fair review.
