Way too much internal dialogue!

I gave it 4 stars because there was way too much internal dialogue from the FMC. There were times that I drifted off because of this and would get lost in the story. Narrators were awesome per usual, and the writing was great. I just wished there was more interaction between the FMC and MMC and less internal dialogue.

Good…. But

It’s way too much internal dialogue. Like it’s overk*ll. It was more internal dialogue than interacting between the MFC and MMC. I found myself skipping (+30 seconds) most of Ember’s chapters because I was like “GET TO THE POINT”. You legit get lost between what’s her thoughts vs. when she’s talking to someone. Then she has these thoughts in 1st person at random times so you’ll think she was ACTUALLY talking to someone, whole time it’s her in her head 😒. For what the story is, it’s good, yet the author did TOO much internal dialogue than interacting. Myles and Trei, were definitely top tier - it’s the writing that doesn’t warrant 5 stars. Worth the credit….. ughhh yeah but get ready to listen to Ember talk to herself for 10hrs. Happy listening 🙃

Amazing

First I wanna say that Myles Washington and Trei Taylor did an amazing job. WHEW. 😮‍💨 Let me just say… this was an INCREDIBLE immersive read! Naima Simone absolutely did her thing with this one.

Ember’s life was heartbreaking from the very beginning. After losing her mother, she was left with a father who failed to protect her and a wicked stepmother, Michelle… aka SATAN herself. 😒 That woman hated Ember for simply existing, and watching everything Ember endured had my blood boiling.

Now let’s talk about Assad. 😩 That man was absolutely unhinged in the best way. Growing up, Ember believed he despised her because of the way he treated her, but as the story unfolded, we learned his actions were rooted in protecting her from the monster living inside their home.

Once Assad becomes the next in line to lead the family, everything changes. He’s calculated, ruthless, possessive, and completely unapologetic. The man gave ZERO concern about the title of “stepsister.” In his mind, they weren’t related by blood, and once he decided Ember was his… there was no changing his mind.
The banter? Top tier.
The chemistry? Off the charts.
The tension? I swear I could feel it through my headphones. 🥵
