I somehow skipped over this one as a child, but I'm glad I happened upon it now. Having grown up in southern Illinois, I recognized some of the towns and a few of the words the "backwoods farmers" used. It's a great story of young Jethro having to grow up fast once his brothers leave the farm to enlist and fight in the Civil War. It shows the derision the southern part of the state faced over Union or Confederacy. The narration was nicely done and fit just right.
