Acerca de esta escucha
A brand-new anthology of stories inspired by the Arthur Conan Doyle canon.
In this follow-up to the acclaimed In the Company of Sherlock Holmes, expert Sherlockians Laurie King and Leslie Klinger put forth the question: What happens when great writers/creators who are not known as Sherlock Holmes devotees admit to being inspired by Conan Doyle stories? While some are highly regarded mystery writers, others are best known for their work in the fields of fantasy or science fiction. All of these talented authors, however, share a great admiration for Arthur Conan Doyle and his greatest creations, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.
To the editors' great delight, these stories go in many directions. Some explore the spirit of Holmes himself; others tell of detectives inspired by Holmes' adventures or methods. A young boy becomes a detective; a young woman sharpens her investigative skills; an aging actress and a housemaid each find that they have unexpected talents. Other characters from the Holmes stories are explored, and even non-Holmesian tales by Conan Doyle are echoed. The variations are endless!
Although not a formal collection of new Sherlock Holmes stories, some entries do fit that mold, while others were inspired by the Conan Doyle canon. The results are breathtaking, for fans of Holmes and Watson as well as listeners new to Doyle's writing.
Full cast of narrators includes Marguerite Gavin, Mirron Willis, Ralph Lister, Saskia Maarleveld, Sarah Nichols, Tim Gerard Reynolds, and Traber Burns.

Historia
In the 1980s and 1990s, the late Terry Golledge wrote 10 Holmes masterful pastiches that perfectly captured Dr. Watson's voice, as well as Holmes’ personality and methods. Mr. Golledge passed away in 1996, before these stories could be published. In early 2022, Terry’s son, Niel Golledge, reached out to Sherlockian editor David Marcum, who was electrified to read such wonderful previously lost tales about the heroes of Baker Street.

The Gardener Estate is one of the most storied and beloved places on the West Coast: a magnificent house in vast formal grounds, home to a family that shaped California—and fought hard to conceal the turmoil and eccentricities within their walls. And now, just as the turmoil seems buried and the Estate prepares to move into a new future, construction work unearths a grim relic of the estate's history: a skull, hidden away some fifty years ago.

In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.

It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

The stories were all wrong—Hook was never the villain. For two centuries, all of the Darling women have disappeared on their 18th birthday. Sometimes they’re gone for only a day, some a week or a month. But they always return broken. Now, on the afternoon of my 18th birthday, my mother is running around the house making sure all the windows are barred and the doors locked. But it’s pointless. Because when night falls, he comes for me. And this time, the Never King and the Lost Boys aren’t willing to let me go.

In Jasper Fforde's Great Britain, circa 1985, time travel is routine, cloning is a reality (dodos are the resurrected pet of choice), and literature is taken very, very seriously. England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, renowned Special Operative in literary detection.

Historia
Sherlock Holmes has not only captivated readers for more than a century and a quarter, he has fascinated writers as well. It is little wonder, then, that when the renowned Sherlockians Laurie R. King and Leslie S. Klinger invited their writer-friends and colleagues to be inspired by the Holmes canon, a cornucopia of stories sprang forth. Now, King and Klinger have invited another 15 masters to become In League with Sherlock Holmes. The contributors to this volume include award-winning authors of horror, thrillers, mysteries, westerns, and science fiction.

Quite Entertaining If You're Okay With INSPIRED
There's a nice variety of what the authors created, including fictional characters gaining agency in the real world, modern characters with names invoking Holmes, Watson, etc., staging of a play based on a Holmes adventure, a young boy insisting to his therapist that he's Holmes, stories that slip right into canon, etc. Like any anthology, some are stronger than others.
My favorites were by William Kent Krueger, best known for his Cork O'Connor series, and Anne Perry, known for her William Monk series and Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. Both evoked an emotional connection within its short length, which impressed me.
Also, the readers are solid, including a couple of my favorites, Kate Reading and Marguerite Gavin.
My only disappointment was I was expecting there to be a story from the editor, Laurie R King, whose known for her Mary Russel and Sherlock Holmes.

Not to a Victorian Lady's Taste
Excellent as these stories are, they did not suit my taste. This is a very subjective opinion, of course, and should not deter any one younger than I from trying and enjoying them. My opinion has nothing to do with re-imagining Holmes as American, female, juvenile, or black, or any combination thereof. It is just like taste in foods, clothing styles, movie genres, or sports teams: "de gustibus non disputandem est."

inconsistent
Stories varied from good to poor. None close to originals or other Holmesian renditions. They do present highly diverse reinventions of Holmes and Watson.

Fun!
It was fun to read so many clever adaptations of Sherlock Holmes stories and mysteries inspired by the Holmes cannon. I really enjoyed all of the different voices and accents and this book. The short stories in this book range from murder mysteries to something inspired by the supernatural. I really think that anyone could enjoy this book and find at least one of the stories they would like.

Very imaginative and enjoyable!
The authors employed their imaginations to create a diverse look at Sherlockian influence! Only the last story gave me pause but I perhaps need to listen to it again. Overall, a treat!

Wonderful collection!
This group of Holmes-inspired stories was a delightful listen! I was impressed by how well the narrators captured the tone of the stories they were emulating. Highly recommend!
