Evy Poumpouras - former Secret Service agent to three presidents and one of only five women to receive the Medal of Valor - demonstrates how we can overcome our everyday fears, have difficult conversations, know who to trust and who might not have our best interests at heart, influence situations, and prepare for the unexpected. This is a self-help book for people who don't usually buy self-help books. Are you too nice? If you find it hard to be assertive, directly ask for what you want, or say "no" to others, then you just might be suffering from too much niceness. In this controversial book, world-renowned confidence expert, Dr. Aziz Gazipura, takes an incisive look at the concept of nice. Through his typical style, Dr. Aziz uses engaging stories, humor, and disarming vulnerability to cut through the nice conditioning and liberate the most bold, expressive, authentic version of you.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Author Thomas Erikson explains that there are four key behavior types that define how we interact with and perceive the people around us. Understanding someone’s pattern of behavior is the key to successful communication. Erikson breaks down the four kinds of behavior types - Reds who are dominant and commanding, Yellows who are social and optimistic, Greens who are laid-back and friendly, and Blues who are analytical and precise - and explains how to identify and interact with each type of person.

Successful people confront well. They know that setting healthy boundaries improves relationships and can solve important problems. They have discovered that uncomfortable situations can be avoided or resolved through direct conversation. But most of us don't know how to have difficult conversations, and we see confrontation as scary or adversarial. Authors Henry Cloud and John Townsend take the principles from their award-winning and best-selling book, Boundaries, and apply them to a variety of the most common difficult situations and relationships.

The most common of common sense
The observations contained in this title were mostly outdated, stereotypical, and childish. The only help offered is in reminding the reader what he/she almost definitely already knows. The "pendulum technique" for deciding whether to accept criticism or not is rather similar to using a magic 8 ball, only with flawed logic to pass it off as being scientific. Despite being so short I still felt this title was a waste of time.

Good advice from a great speaker
Has good advice on handling criticism by others and on giving it yourself. Some of the topics she covers (the pendulum--which is interesting but unenlightening) are a little hokie, but that's as bad as it gets. The quality wasn't great (format 2); listening on a CD was semi-painful, but on the computer it sounded fine. She's a great speaker, though, so that makes it much easier to listen to. Recommended if you're looking for advice (albeit not a ton--only 40 minutes) on how to handle criticism.
