Wonderfully crafted storytelling,

Listening to this colorful and entertaining story brought me back to my childhood growing up in a small California farm town. What a beautiful reminder of a time when what a person stood for meant something to be respected. A time when moral choices were primary and dependable not just when convenient but also when difficult It was a time when decisions were based on doing the right because it was a reflection of the person not the law. The main character, Lester, was human and believable in every way and reminds the reader that to be human is to make mistakes but to "live up to them" and do the right thing. I loved the narrator who brought the story alive with his spot on inflections and voice. Wonderful escape from our over homogenized daily grind!

A dark version of the Andy Griffith show

The author did a great job in painting and developing the atmosphere and characters in small town, backwoods USA following on the heels of the second world war. This allowed the reader to be immersed in the division of societal classes that is at the root of a murder that occurs. Combined with the slow drawl of the narrator, it was easy to fully engage in the story for a most enjoyable experience.

The only detraction was that it was a touch predictable in places, and I was able to foresee some upcoming developments, but that is a minor criticism. Don't let this deter you, as the places, character, and atmosphere all make for a very worthwhile read.

Well worth a credit for this one!

A captivating mystery in a captivating town

What did you like best about this story?

The richly-written characters in the book had me caring about them. I also liked the pacing of the story--detailed where it needed to be, but also fast-paced with its action. It was clear that certain points were going to be revealed, and it was great fun trying to figure out how the characters would react to them.

What does Eric G. Dove bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Eric Dove's narration was completely believable. Each character had his or her unique voice, appropriate but not a caricature.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was particularly moved by the friendship between the police chief and the newspaperman. It was pretty clear that there would be a rift between them coming up, and I was very moved by how it was resolved at the end.

Any additional comments?

Once the characters and the makeup of the town were established, the book was gripping and very entertaining.

Would you consider the audio edition of Dog's Run to be better than the print version?

A serious crime novel from the 50's. The story as it is read has the listener see the story like a movie. It is different style for the authors from his previous humorous books.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dog's Run?

The time it took place.

More than Entertainment, it is a lesson in life.

If you could sum up Dog's Run in three words, what would they be?

Nick Russell's style is down to earth, full of real life. He places his readers in the midst of the entire story and we are happy to be there. I listened to the audible version of Dogs Run as one might listen to an artist playing a fine instrument. His words came to life through the narrator and literately filled me with Hate, Compassion, anger, love, lust, and a curiosity that grabbed my ear like know other story. The Characters moved and lived in me while I listened. It was an amazing story and captured my attention causing me to listen with such keen interest that the world around me vanished, and only the words of Nick Russell did I hear. I cannot wait for the next Audio. Thank you Nick Russell.

small town corruption

Lester's response was a disappointment when Robert's informant got murderer. He irked me because he wanted to turn a blind eye to the affluent- or so it seemed. For a lawman he wasn't very honorable and I think he should have confessed to Liz. Liz was no paragon either. She avoided her mom due to dementia and foisted it all on her brother until it was out of hand. Some very evil selfish people and some are just ignorant. The epilogue was very uplifting. Robert's mom mistaking him for his dad!!! lol I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a great job.
