Resumen del Editor

Nine exclusive adventures featuring a multitude of Doctors and companions.

The collection opens with a trilogy of stories set in the First World War—Men of War, Horrors of War and Fortunes of War—in which the First, Third and Sixth Doctors are pitted against a rogue element in time. In The Thing from the Sea, the Fourth Doctor and Mrs Wibbsey meet an alien serpent in 18th-century Italy, and in The Elysian Blade, the Second Doctor, Jamie and Victoria find trouble on a distant Earth colony. In The Flight of the Sun God, the Sixth Doctor and Peri join a spaceship of company executives on a one-way trip, whilst The Scent of Blood brings the Eighth Doctor to Victorian Edinburgh in search of vampires. The Eleventh Doctor and Clara discover Paradise Lost on the distant edge of a nebula, and the Fourth Doctor returns to Earth—and Mrs Wibbsey—to face the menace of The Winged Coven.

Peter Purves, Katy Manning, Colin Baker, Susan Jameson, Frazer Hines, Nicola Bryant, Dan Starkey and Jacob Dudman are the readers of these thrilling stories written by Justin Richards, Paul Magrs, David Bishop, Nev Fountain, Andrew Lane and Darren Jones.

Underwhelming

I picked this up for the 4th stories, and didn't enjoy them as much as I had hoped. They both feature Mrs. Wibbsey, and while the first was interesting enough, I found the writing pretty poor in the second. The narrator did an excellent job with the voice work in both, but the plot of the second story fell pretty flat, and there was no real resolution to the central issue of Wibbsey doling out the Doctor's gadgets. Felt like unedited fan fiction to me.

The remaining stories were pretty good, and I'd say that the best of them was the Clara/11 story. The narrator for that story was astonishingly good with the voices. You might find yourself thinking that Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman swing by to assist.

Eh

It’s pretty decent, really. The first three were awesome, especially the Fortunes of War, giving Six a real moment of sadness and pain. The Scent of Blood plays really well on Eight’s gothic side, which is surprisingly rare to see in his stories. Thing From the Sea has a creepy monkey. Yeah, that’s all for that one. Creepy monkey. But Flight of the Sun God and heaven forbid Paradise Lost were so boring I wanted to rip my ears off with a Sonic Lance (yes, casual viewers, those DO exist). All in all pretty harmless, at worst it’s boring to tears, but at best it’s a deep rooted heart-reaching beautiful character work. I dunno, man, if you want it, go for it, but for now I’ll just stick with our lord and savior Big Finish (listen to Home Truths, also on Audible). As a whole - 5/10
