Dietary fats are one of the macronutrients essential for human function. Several micronutrients are also crucial for the body. It is important to understand how these work in a healthy body, particularly when conditions such as celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, colitis or diabetes are present.
Macronutrients: These are the primary building blocks of your diet and provide your body with energy. They’re needed in large amounts. Macros comprise protein, carbohydrates, and fat.[1]
Micronutrients: These include vitamins and minerals. Small doses go a long way in supporting the health of your immune system, cells, and metabolism, among others. [2] These are Vitamins, minerals and Water.
In this book I concentrate on what Dietary Fats are and their role in a Healthy Eating Plan relating to all the conditions, but especially Type 2 Diabetes. Unsaturated fats or “Good Fats” provide essential fatty acids your body can’t make and HDL or “Good” Cholesterol. Saturated fats, or “Bad Fats” increase your LDL or “bad” cholesterol if you are consuming too much.
Six essential nutrients help maintain bodily functions and promote overall well-being. These include protein, carbs, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. Eating a varied diet full of fruits, vegetables, healthy proteins and fats, and whole grains can help you get enough of these six essential nutrients and more. .[3]
As with all nutritional challenges, particularly for individuals with these specific conditions, consuming the appropriate amounts of each of these six nutrients from healthy sources is as important as quantity and maintaining a healthy balance to ensure adequate vitamin intake.
High-protein, low-carbohydrate diets focus on including more protein-rich foods in your daily diet while limiting carbs such as grains and starchy vegetables. Many people choose to follow this type of diet for weight loss, but they’re also used for other health issues, such as high blood sugar, diabetes, and prediabetes.[4]
