Possible Spoilers:
I’m happy to say that Ms Feehan has written an engaging story, but it’s mostly just about Shabina Foster. Rainier Ashcroft is referenced many times, but he doesn’t make an appearance until the last quarter of the book. Then we get his love language as expressed in dedication - that he’s built his world around her - how fast he can get to her.
They do finally say to each other that they love each other. They do decide they want to live together and marry. They do Not have sex. It is a bummer that Feehan doesn’t have her remotely able to have a physically intimate relationship with him. It’s not truly a marriage without it. (Maybe a contractual friendship or a work contract offering limited legal protection or obligations, but not a true marriage.)
I guess the damage of Shabina’s months of rape and torture are still in the way of her healing. Surprisingly, the zero sex doesn’t truly take away from Feehan’s written story. She has plenty of suspense with various possible sources of menace, then the PTSD, the parental issues, then the murders. And she has Shabina bouncing back strong enough to take on LeFevre and the murderer.
Out of all the ladies - Stella, Vienna, Raine, Harlow, Zahra - it seems that Shabina had the most horrific life experience. And the most gratifying experience - until it was destroyed by a monster. In creating Shabina’s backstory, and with the bits of horror that Feehan lets fall, it’s a relief that she is also able to create a period of peace and learning for Shabina with Mama Achmad. There aren’t enough gentle souls in our world to offset the evil and not enough Rainiers to protect them.
While Pfeiffer’s voice was pleasant enough, it just did NOT fit this character. Maybe a modern urban story? Like a Lucy Score? But not this multilingual woman with Arabic sensibilities who has been around the world with parents that own an international company. Then there’s a serious LACK of character differentiation…. I think Feehan’s writing success should have earned her a more considered selection for narrator. A good choice can elevate a story another level. Whoever chose Pfeiffer needs job retraining or reassignment. Or get someone who wants to do the best they can, not just fulfill minimum requirements.
I still recommend this story but it’s reader’s choice on paper, e or audio.
Question: Why did recorded books post such a poor Summary for this audio in Audible? Did they have an intern do it? Maybe the arrogant, entitled male child of a buddy?
kudos to Feehan
