Resumen del Editor

David Walker (1796-1830), the son of an enslaved man and a free black woman, was an entrepreneur, abolitionist, author and anti-slavery activist. In 1829, he published An Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World, a radical call for black solidarity and resistance to slavery.

It raised awareness of the abuses of slavery, encouraged pride in its black readers and offered hope that change would eventually come. Being a radical anti-slavery document, it caused a stir upon publication, as it called upon readers to take an active role in fighting their oppression, regardless of the risk. Walker also criticized the American Colonization Society, which sought to deport all free and freed blacks from the United States to a colony in Africa.

An important part of American history

To really understand the civil war, and Abraham Lincoln's radical views that made it inevitable, you have to read this set of four essays that influenced him at a young age.
David Walker was assassinated shortly after the release of the final essay in this book. after reading his words, I now understand why. these are words of fire that several decades later would result in the war that finally brought down the institution of slavery.
It's particularly interesting to watch the writer, over the course of these four essays, evolve from a man who believed that God would take care of things in time, into a man who preached it was America's Christian duty to stand up and end slavery themselves.
Especially fascinating in these times when so many Americans are demanding that racial violence end once and for all.

Powerful American History

A powerful and important story of American history. In 2023 there are unfortunately many comparisons to the America described by David Walker in the Appeal. This was well read and something I plan to listen to again.

Should be required required reading for all.

Americans permitted slavery, promoted racism, and intended to torture for all perpetuity as Christians. Wretched.
