I love the duality of the story which leaves the reader questioning everything.

The dark king is either a menace from the past or the savior of the present. Or is he? Every time we get a handle on what's going on, the author hints at the opposite conclusion. Can't wait for the finish.

Better than Dark Rise!

Slow in the middle but purposeful. I love Pacat’s writing. She has a talent for conveying small gestures with big meaning and incremental slow seduction. It is a patient thing, one you aren’t aware that you are holding your breath for. But the romance isn’t really the driving force of the story, it’s a small part of it and important. However, if you took out the attraction of Will and James, the story still works. This is different than The Captive Prince trilogy (one of my favorite series). Towards the end of Dark Rise, I could predict the outcome, but found myself riveted anyway. I was able to listen via audiobook and the narrator was fantastic. I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment and will be rereading this again.

Favorite book of 2023

Everything about this is stunning. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
No one does it like C.S. Pacat.

Incredible Narrator, Incredible story.

So many twists and turns.... most books have a similar story line that you can kind of guess at... not this one.

This has got to be one of my favorite fantasy series of all time. I don't know how I'm going to survive waiting for the third book.

How am I supposed to go on with my life?! Ugh, I NEED more! 10/10 would recommend! Waiting impatiently for the next book;)

Even better than the first!!

I might be frustrated and wanting more immediately, but I have to say that was just incredible! What a ride!

NO SLEEP!

I waited up until 3 am for this audiobook to drop and I am now finished reading 2 am then next day. If the next volume had already been published, I don't think I sleep the next 2 days lol. This was honestly such a riveting read and I loved everything about it. Highly recommend!

I like and hate certain aspects.

So, why is everyone listening to a 10 year old that doesn't even know anyone. she met him one day and said he's this and that. the main group has been through a lot. it's that easy for a 10 year old to turn them against the main guy? she doesn't even know anything. Most of them don't know the whole story. if friends switch up like that it's crazy. I wanted Elizabeth and her sister killed early. they say what is this and don't listen to anything or use any context clues. like certain parts are trash. I did enjoy the book. however, the rushed part of Katherine and Elizabeth don't even need to be there. they should have had a bigger part I'd they were gonna go against main .

Exceptional writing and storytelling

Just incredible and cannot wait for more! The character arcs and quick but subtle pacing kept me glued to this book. WOW!
