Comfy Read

Not too heavy, not too exciting, not dull. Just comfy. Magic and demons and love. At first I was thrown by the story jumping around but I enjoyed ever chapter like an individual story. I will definitely be purchasing the rest of the series.

One of my fave M/M books - well done in audio

If you could sum up Dance with the Devil in three words, what would they be?

Creative, sexy fun!
I was happily surprised by this audiobook. I loved this story in ebook and sometimes that doesn't transfer well into an audio version. I think that this story does do well in audio because the narration is great, and the world-building details are well written. It's a fantasy/paranormal gay romance. The way it is presented as "case files" for each chapter is a bit odd until you get used to it. The cases are not in order (the timeline moves back and forth so you need to pay attention to what case number it is to understand that fact) at first that bothered me when I read it - but once I figured it out it was awesome. It is imaginative, creative, sexy and filled with magic.

Which character – as performed by Paul Morey – was your favorite?

Chris White - he did the self-deprecating sarcasm well. Unfortunately I have listened to quite a few Paul Morey books and now the characters are starting to sound alike. When he did Sable's character I kept thinking about another book where a character sounded just like him.

Any additional comments?

If you find the timeline confusing just hang in there you will get used to it. I have read this story MANY times and I still love it because the characters are endearing and the creativity is off the charts.

Really good!

This is a story told as a collection of cases. The cases are not told in chronological order, but that is part of the charm. We get to meet Chris before and he gets together with Sable (sp?). It was a refreshing way to get to know the characters. I loved it!
Paul Morey did a good job with the differentiating between the characters. My only gripe is that he had somewhat of a monotone, so some of the dialogue sounded almost flat - to me. I did love how Sable sounded though.
Definitely recommend listening to this!

What made the experience of listening to Dance with the Devil the most enjoyable?

At first I didn't think I would like the narrator but he did a wonderful job with this story.

Doug, really enjoyed him.

Any additional comments?

I went back and forth on weather I liked the style the author picked to tell the story. I liked and disliked at the same time. It got a bit confusing with the back and forth that is done. Still I did enjoy it. In the end I liked the way the story developed.

The info-dumping that was done was the only reason it wasn't a five star for me. I felt the author could have done a better job in streaming this information into the story.

I quite enjoyed that the story also gave us the POV's of some of the secondary characters. I hope this is something that I continue to see in the next books in the series. I really like to see varied views of the story and it helped to fill out the characters.

Witches, ghosts, goblins, demons! PNR galore!

This is one of Megan Derr's most beloved novels for me. I love her writing style which reminds me of fairytales.

The structure isn't something easy for everyone to get behind but it's one of the things I liked. Telling Doug's, Phil's and Chris's stories interwoven with cases that Chris as a detective handled. Yes there's a back and forth in timeline, giving a bit of background, most times after the fact, but me, I loved that.

Sable and Chris are really, really hot and good together!

What I could have done without, being all the more pronounced in audio, is the many repetitions of names and that bit more editing that needed to tighten up the novel.

Paul Morey is one of my favorite narrators with quite the voice range. I just wish he put a little bit of more performance in his narrations to really give the story life!

Great urban fantasy with mystery and romance

Dance with the Devil is a great urban fantasy with mystery and romance. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fun book with quirky characters.

Paul Morey does a great job with the narration for this book. He really brings the characters to life.

This is a highly entertaining story with well-developed characters, engaging mysteries and intriguing world development. I love how the characters and main plot are developed through many mini-mystery sub-plots.

There is some playful dubcon in this book. It didn't change my enjoyment of the book. But I know it's not for everyone.

Overall I loved this book, and I can't wait to move onto the next one.

Brilliant!

I’ve never listened/read a book written quite like this before.

It’s snippets, short stories, written as case files. They’re not arranged in chronological order, which I think bothered people, but how the case files/chapters are presented makes total sense. It’s layers of building the background stories, the world-building, the character backgrounds and history. They’re told in ways of flashbacks and recent happenings. The story makes sense in the end. It all adds up and you see the bigger picture.

It’s brilliant, really. Paul Morey’s narration was good.

I’d listen to this again, it’s definitely not boring. 👏🏼

Good but skips around

Overall the book is great, but it skips around to much without much order with it consisting of many small stories.

Love to book though.

A little confusing at first as you get used to the jumping story line and the start was slow...

But persevere!

Because the book is a lovely little gem. I felt very satisfied at the end and while it's no masterpiece it is an easy listen and a ray of light on a dreary day.

Love the narration, love to book.

Told through a series of case files the romance here is sweet, hot, and fun to watch unfold. The story does not run sequentially, as is mentioned by other reviewers, and may well mean the tale is not to your liking. I took a chance in face of those comments and I'm, personally, glad I did.
I love Chris and Sable, and peeking at the blurbs for the next books in the series my complaint is that they don't seem to feature again, yet. I'm very much a character centric reader and I REALLY would like to see more Chris and Sable.
The world, itself, is well realised, and this means it's easy to see that more tales can be told. I like how magic works in this world.
For me, the picky bit would be that in the later chapters we almost seem to have too many characters running around but that's me beinga little picky. That I will be re-reading this book is a given; comfort reads are us.
