A new edition of a seminal text in Critical Race Theory.

Since the publication of the third edition of Critical Race Theory: An Introduction in 2017, the United States has experienced a dramatic increase in racially motivated mass shootings and a pandemic that revealed how deeply entrenched medical racism is and how public disasters disproportionately affect minority communities. We have also seen a sharp backlash against Critical Race Theory, and a president who deemed racism a thing of the past while he fanned the flames of racial intolerance and promoted nativist sentiments among his followers. Now more than ever, the racial disparities in all aspects of public life are glaringly obvious.

Taking note of all these developments, this fourth edition covers a range of new topics and events, addressing the rise of a fierce wave of criticism from right-wing websites, think tanks, and foundations, some of which insist that America is now colorblind and has little use for racial analysis and study. Award-winning authors Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic also address the rise in legislative efforts to curtail K-12 teaching of racial history.

Critical Race Theory, Fourth Edition, is essential for understanding developments in this burgeoning field, which has spread to other disciplines and countries. The new edition also covers the ways in which other societies and disciplines adapt its teachings and, for listeners wanting to advance a progressive race agenda, includes new readings and questions for discussion aimed at outlining practical steps to achieve this objective.

Critical Race Theory, Fourth Edition is expertly narrated Karen Chilton, acclaimed narrator of The New Jim Crow.

As a 65+ white person brought up by bigoted, white parents, mostly in the central southeastern part of the United States, it took a while to throw off the racist indoctrination that had trickled down to me over time. Fortunately, in high school, and then later once I began my IT career working with people from all walks of life, of all colors, races, ethnic groups, religions, etc., I learned that everybody is the same at core. And I also learned over time that it is a shame how the United States incarcerates a ridiculously disproportionate member of people of color, those which, in many cases the system has kept down with a series of bigoted stereotypical racist laws going back to the beginning, 400 years ago, when the first ship dropped off the African slaves, captured to serve hard labor in the American colonies. Now, I never owned slaves, or mistreated people of color, even verbally, despite my wayward upbringing. I am the fourth generation of immigrants from Belgium and Germany, all of whom came over after the Civil War was over, and who were originally treated like most other poor immigrants, whether European, Irish, Italian, Polish, etc. despite my own humble beginnings, I come from a long line of people who never had all that much money, you worked 40 or more hours per week for everything they have. Still, I benefited from being white, from being at least middle class, and I cannot imagine the difficulties faced by many or all minorities even today, 400 years after that first ship landed. America’s original sin is the mistreatment of those who are not white, of those who do not have money or property, and of those who are not male. The sooner more of us understand that, and begin to vote appropriately to make positive changes, the sooner we can get our country out of the disgusting gutter it is now in, and perhaps one day even be looked at once again as that shining city on the hill. Through reading and understanding of books like this one we can educate ourselves to make better choices in the future. Let the education begin.

Everybody, but especially white people, should read this book

I chose this book because of the controversy on critical race theory. I came away with a better understanding of what critical race theory is and what it is not. The book is scholastic and much of what I listened to should’ve been omitted in speech and just referred to - such as suggested readings, class exercises and details on specific legal cases. The actual information when these things are omitted amount to perhaps 25% of the book. The authors should realize that there is a big difference between a book designed for reading and one targeted for listening. I think it’s still a good read. Just be prepared to fast-forward through a lot of the reference detail unless you’re interested in that.
