Sweet Romance with likeable characters

I liked the people in this small mountain town. The twin boys are cute and funny. The widow mom is sweet and appealing. The hero, former soldier and handyman is strong and romantic. The Retired Major and former nun are two wonderful additions to the storyline and their romance as satisfying as the widow and handyman. There is much tension when town and widow is threatened by a group of villains and saved by the hero.

Linda Howard never fails to deliver. Just the right amount of terror and just the right amount of romance!

Great story

I really enjoy audiobooks that have two readers. This book had the right amount of humor and whats gonna happen next to them.

Recommend

Years later, this is still one of my fave Howard books. Sandra Brown is prolific but Linda Howard does this kind of romantic suspense so much better. Other faves are Now You See Her, Mr Perfect, After the Night, Shades of Twilight. I also like the character of Jenner in BURN - specifically the before part of the story. Some of LH’s earliest books were Harlequin and they were great!
I really like Joyce Bean as narrator for this story. Hill just added.

The performance was great, story? Not so much

I normally love this author but this one was a bit drawn out. First, the good things. The main characters were great. Cate was a wonderful but strict mother who loved her kids and her bed and breakfast. Cal is a heroic man who can't help but blush everytime he's near Cate. Their relationship was adorable and her kids were hilarious. They reminded me so much of my own. The plot was an interesting concept, but I wish it was written a bit better

Now for the bad.

There were too many details. It really drags the story down. The readers are smart enough to figure out what the author is saying instead of explaining every little single action and feeling to the point that we want to fast forward until we get the story going again.

She focused a bit too much on the antagonists situations rather than Cal and Cate's relationship and interactions. It got to the point that I skipped almost all the antagonist's scenes and I was still caught up. It only proved to me that the antagonist's story just wasn't as important to the overall tale.

And last but not least, the love scene. I was so excited to read the culmination of all the sexual tension between the two main characters. But when the scene finally came, I was so disappointed. It just didn't give their relationship justice and it seemed more awkward than anything.

For all these reasons, this book just wasn't on my list of favorite books. I had such high hopes but they were slightly dashed.

Great audio performances

The story is a bit improbable, and there is a bit of prosaic narrative, but the story is still fun with interesting characters and wonderful narration.

A Favorite

This is one of my favorite Linda Howard books ,my first love of course is the Mackenzies.Loved all the characters in the story just the right amount of humor .the townspeople were charming.and really come togather in a time of crisis.The villains were suitably villainou.this is a go to read when I am low I can read this and feel better. Thank you ms. Howard I envy your talent.

Howards most laid back Hero~ I like it~ 4 STARS

Widow Cate has twin boys to raise in Trail Stop. When Handyman Calvin stops 2 men from holding her at gun point we soon know some one is out to GET Cate. When a Guest at Cate's B&B disappears along with the mysterious FLASHDRIVE he carries along with him. Cate and the entire town of Trailstop are soon under siege with a para miliary gang who want the flash drive at all costs. This is a fun. Cate is clueless that handiman Calvin one of the most laid back of all Howards stud hunks is hopeless in love with her, and he is barely on any ones radar. When he drops 2 men with guns to save Cate we learn the quiet guy is ex military. The shy handiman turn hero is very good in this one. I give this 4 STARS for first rate story and characters and very good reader~ and one of the more interesting characters Calvin who shows us sometimes the quiet ones are the most fun.
