Back on the home front, the injustice of discrimination against African Americans was playing out as much on Main Street as in the military. Enlisted black men were segregated from white soldiers and regularly relegated to service duties.
At Fort Benning, Georgia, First Sergeant Walter Morris’s men served as guards at The Parachute School while the white soldiers prepared to be paratroopers. The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, in the words of Morris, “proved that the color of a man had nothing to do with his ability.”

Heroes Against All Odds
No human being should have to put up with the degradations heaped on Black Americans in the past 400 years ... especially considering what America is supposed to stand for. The men of the 555 not only put up, but stood up and defended their country right or wrong in hopes of a better future. The telling of their struggles and achievements must ring in your mind and heart. THIS is what all the world needs to fight for: not races but the human race.
