Ever wondered what the parable of the prodigal son would have been like if told by the older brother? What may have been the background story of Simon of Cyrene? What may have happened to Martha, sister of Mary?
If you have ever asked yourself any of these questions, I am sure you will be interested in Collected Apocrypha.
As with real, extra-biblical Apocrypha, these short stories were inspired by the biblical events and parables, and the curiosity about what may have happened to the characters later, or what would have the parables told from a different perspective looked like. The readers will instantly recognise parables such as that of the workers in the vineyard, the two debtors, the wise and foolish virgins, or characters such as Martha, the sister of Mary, Simon of Cyrene, or Jude the Apostle. The stories were written about 30 years ago. Recently, inspired by the story of the creator of the series The Chosen, I have decided to translate them into English with the hope of capturing the imagination and inspiring an English-speaking reader. My mum filters her engagement with the biblical stories through her own life experience and ideas and often re-tells them with a surprising and provocative twist. The Apocrypha are also a testament to her own ‘wrestling with God’ and the biblical account.
