A Secret Too Deep

Garryn is Prime, heir to the throne of the Empire. His dreams become too disturbing and soon he comes to realize he's not the one having them. As he goes in search of this mystery, it's obvious someone will do anything, even Kill, to keep him from it. No spoilers here, but suffice to say it's an arduous journey with many perils to overcome for the young Prime and his new friends.

Makes you think

I wasn't sure I was going to like this, it was my first serious novel in Sci-Fi. I love the genre but know the books can sometimes get bogged down in the descriptions and wordiness of creating the worlds of the imagination. I know Linda's work and she is a detailed and imaginative writer, and while this was a bit slow at the very start, she quickly had me hating to hit pause. By the end I wanted more and hope maybe she visits the characters again to see what happens now. I love that she is the type of writer, too, that knows her character well. She does not overburden you will detain about every bit of their description or a long bio of all of their back ground story, but with her well placed words and actions you know them. You may even wish she would give you the complete characterization, but you can be happy with developing them in your own mind. This book with also make you think but I won't spoil all the details you have to here it for yourself and think for yourself "what if", that's what this genre does best.

Really, really bad

I listened to the whole thing but it was a hate listen. The writing is terrible, truly bad. The narrator has a pleasant voice but she's just an awful actor. The world building is generic and rips off every other piece of science fiction you've ever seen or read: Star Wars, Star Trek, space operas. I don't know why it's called a "Victorian" science fiction story except that the writer's last name is Thackeray. Perhaps she's a descendant. If so, poor ol' William Makepeace must be turning in his grave to think that his great-great-great granddaughter is writing such hackneyed, poorly imagined crap.

Medium

2 and a half star out of 5.
I bought this book during COVID first waves. And I would not help to compare - SPOILER - global virus then vaccine then sterilisation, then genocide...
The narration was not too bad, given it was a female and most of the main charaters are male. SPOILER the nighmares about the genocide was really disturbing. How one would perform a battle in the space..., I kind of skipped that part.
The story was interesting especially due to the curious circumastances. The better part is the first half-2 third when the investigation is on-going. The end felt a bit empty...
