Miles Norris, a retired computer salesman, has lost the will to live. Approaching 80 years of age, his wife taken by cancer, he has been banished from an assisted living center in Florida because of violent behavior. Now his only son, Scott, is moving him against his will to the Better Life Spa, an expensive, state-of-the-art Alzheimer’s center outside Washington, DC, that claims to be able to provide all the care the old man could ever need - or so they think. Scott is unaware that the Better Life also operates a parallel business, a secret one, unrelated to healthcare. However, also like Scott, they, too, the Better Life Spa, fail to appreciate that the old man that they have admitted to their facility, depressed and unresponsive, is much more than he appears.

When Miles awakens a violent game of human chess plays out. A rollercoaster of intrigue and revelations leads to one truth: There can be no stalemate or surrender in this contest. It will only end with checkmate.

Old dog, new tricks

This story moves quickly and the character development is easy to follow. Miles situation somehow become believable and you enjoy cheering him on. I especially think this would be fun for older folk who can relate to the world “moving on without them”. Looking forward

a very interesting spy story started 50 years ago.

many twists and turns in an exciting account of two c.i.a. operatives develop after the senior agent saves his partner from certain death by russian and maybe even german interrogators, long ago.

flash ahead to one family forced to put their father into a senior care center, against his wishes.

clues of patient abuses, mysterious drug traffic, and questionable treatment procedures take their toll...

both the story and the performance were excellent, causing me to listen to the full eight hours nonstop today!

Loved the audiobook. Had a hard time stopping to eat or work. Very well done and keep me enjoying the read as ll the way to the end. Well done.

Exciting, fast moving

Once I started I couldn’t put it down. I loved the characters and the author did a good job of developing them. Anybody who loves espionage stores will love this book. It would make a good James Bond movie where Bond is a 78 year old in a rest home. Sounds funny but it totally serious. It hooks you in right from the start and doesn’t let you loose until the end. I wanted the story to go on. Maybe Michael Burton can give us a sequel.
