Resumen del Editor

William Smithback, a New York Times reporter, and his wife, Nora Kelly, a Museum of Natural History archeologist, are brutally attacked in their apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Eyewitnesses claim and the security camera confirms the killer seen leaving the building was their strange, sinister neighbor - a man who, by all reports, was already dead.

Captain Hayward leads the official homicide investigation, while Pendergast, D'Agosta, and Nora undertake a private quest for the truth. Their serpentine journey takes them into a part of Manhattan they never imagined could exist: a secretive and deadly hotbed of Obeah, the West Indian Zombii cult of sorcery and magic. And it is here they find their true peril is just beginning.

Here's a suggestion...

Don't give away major plot elements in your reviews!

It is very easy to write a review without ruining the book for others by giving away the major events.

Please try to be more considerate of others who have yet to read the book.

Entertaining

While not up to the caliber of Cabinet of Curiousities or Brimstone this is a very entertaining book. The inclusion of NYC history added to the story.
The narrator does a very good job.

Brilliant

I have now complleted four of the Pendergast novels, I intend to start at the beginning with Relic and read those I passed over previously. I am hooked, Lincoln Childs and Douglas Preston have with little doubt created a legendary character and filled his world with unique and colorful imaginings. Thanks to Audible for making these books, with great readers available.

Edge of your seat reading

Great story, as usual, but I miss Scott Brick narrating. He does a much better job separating character voices, inflicting panic and fear in his tone and cadence, and drawing me into the book.

Good, Almost Excellent

Preston and Child deliver one of their good stories here. In the world of Preston/Child, what makes an outstanding listen? Most important is having lots of Pendergast in the plot. Some don't, if you can believe that. Other characters need to be strong too. That's not so great here.

But the big negative here is the narrator's vocalization of the other worldly voices. Endless oogahs and eeows rendered at max volume. Not his fault, of course, if that's what the author wrote. Still, hard to listen to.
For diehard Preston and Child fans, like me, a good listen.

It's pretty good

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yeah, it was well spent. Especially if you're already invested in the series. Definitely read or listen to the other books in the series first if you haven't already.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Definitely, although it would be tough to make into a movie.

Any additional comments?

It wasn't the best in the Pendergast series so far. Especially dealing with whole Vodoo themes. It got a little carried away, but the story line continues and it was pretty good.

Excellent Pendergast Story

My husband and I have devoured all the Preston/Child Pendergast novels and were eagerly waiting for more.
So when we discovered this new novel had come out, but only in hardback, I jumped at the chance to hear it in audio.
I thought Rene Auberjonois did a terrific job of narrating and loved every minute of this novel.

Not smart

These authors don't really use their head and that's why they will be a Baldacci or Cussler etc... Killing off your 2nd most intriguing and eccentric character that helped your books was not smart. Not sure how interested I am continuing.

Not one of their best

Really stretched believability. Also tough act to follow the evil genius of pendergasts brother in the previous books. This book just seemed thrown together.

Good stuff

The gang is back, sort of. Oops. Anyway, a good “read”. Rene A does a fine job as he did last time. (No British accents this time so he gets an A). Just saw someone said “too much blood and gore”…yeah, maybe a bit much. But all books in this excellent series have a bit of a dark side. Second time around with the series, and still enjoying them. I listen to the reg versions, sans background music. I tried one with music and “returned” it after 10 min. Prefer less musak.
