Candide and his tutor, Pangloss, travel the globe trying to follow the philosophy "All is for the best in this, the best of all possible worlds". However, they are stung and let down at every turn, being robbed, tortured, and ridiculed, amongst other trials.

On hearing about their often disastrous travels, a listener feels unfortunately less than empathetic, and can't help laughing out loud at this very funny account of the trail our optimistic travellers take, and at their eternal and endearing joy at the world and its potential discoveries.

I was completely enthralled!

To my surprise, I loved it! It wasn't what I was expecting, but it was very interesting and I found myself on the edge of my seat waiting for every next word lol.

Well read, very well acted!

Agreeable voice. Even narration. Read with a happy heart and parts acted out just right.

Why the music?

Story was good, narrator, very good; but the musical interludes were too frequent and much too long. The music didn't enhance the experience, but rather seemed out of place

It is a light read that uses events, rather than introspection, to explore a philosophical concept.

Happily ridiculous adventure.

I guess a lot of people read this in school. I hadn't touched it till I turned 30. Didn't know anything about the story and had very low expectations. Fortunately I was delighted and entertained nearly the whole way through. I recommend this situational comedy to anyone that enjoys satire and facepalms.

Outstanding characterisation, excellent expression to convey humour and the hyperbole.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Candide- is just so accepting of everything and gracious to all. He seems to be lacking in the darker side of human nature.

Which scene was your favorite?

Difficult to say as it is a heroic romp through the world.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I listened to it in one sitting.

Highly recommend this, it is satire at its best!

Humorous Tragedy

Would you try another book from Voltaire and/or Andrew Sachs?

I would definitely try another book from Voltaire. A book narrated by Andrew Sachs wouldn't deter me.

Would you recommend Candide to your friends? Why or why not?

Candide was actually a fun listen. The humor is so understated. It's really interesting how there is so much tragedy, but I would still call this a comedy.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

His style was a little odd. He would elongate some of the words at the end. It was just a little awkward.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Possibly...It would really depend on who the director was and who the actors were. There are so many ways this story could go wrong.

Rather read this one.

I found the narrator and the book very good. However, The book is so intense I wished to understand every word, which I don't insist upon in other cases, and since English is not my mother tongue I rather read this one to fully enjoy it.
