Resumen del Editor

There is a dark underside to the sunny city of St. Augustine, Florida. An ancient evil is awakened in the Tolomato Cemetery, and is intent on stalking and destroying the citizens of the town. The evil creature, a Shiru, was believed to be a mythical beast from ancient Indian legend. The legend says the Shiru once roamed the earth attempting to mate with the women of the local Indian tribes in an effort to breed, but the Indians recognized the danger and hunted them down, destroying their hideous deformed offspring.

But this legend is so old, that almost no one in modern day St. Augustine knows of it, and if they did they wouldn't believe it...that is until one, summoned by three women dabbling in black magic, crosses over from the dead. Now the Shiru is determined to get revenge on the human race, and to breed with a strong woman with an ancient blood line. Unbeknownst to her, local tourguide, half-Cherokee Ssabra Onih, is the Shiru's target. Fortunately for her, and the rest of the town, the spirit of Chief Tolomato comes to guide her, and enlists her help to hunt down the evil Shiru and send it back to the underworld.

At the same time, city police officer Jack Colvin is working hard to track down the perpetrator of a series of grisly murders. Soon Colvin's and Onih's paths cross, and they join forces with the help of Chief Tolomato and other friendly spirits, in a desperate attempt to stop the seemingly invincible Shiru.

Not my favorite but still good

Good story and I like the narrator, but I have never been more frustrated with a book. The ending literally hurt me. I almost just turned it off.

Fast book, good story

The book travels buy fast but it is a good story. It's my second Owl Goingback book , the first was Crota which to me was a far superior novel but I wasn't disappointed with Breed at all. Living very close to St. Augustine my whole life I've stood in every landmark in the book countless times and it really made the book fun to read. At night that is a spooky town to say the least... now it will be even more.

Not this authors best work in my opinion.

Still a good story and I liked the characters but wasn't the best I've listened to from this author. If you got a credit to spend its worth the listen.

Breed

This book was scary good. I loved this author. All of his stories are very intense. I get so involved in the story, that I feel myself in the middle of it. Also the narrater with his beautiful voice transports you inside the story.

Pleasantly Surprised

Whenever an author follows up a story with one that could be construed as a re-write from the previously published work, doubts are abundant. I was not disappointed in Breed. Good story, good character development, not the ending I expected (well, the ending yes, but not the climax that got me there) so it was a pleasure to hear it to the end. Good narration, good story, worth the download.

Disappointing

Based on the description and some of the reviews, I thought I'd give this book a listen. It wasn't for me.

This novel wasn't horrible--it managed to keep my interest throughout, but sometimes just barely. Many times a thriller or horror book will start out slow, but then the action will pick up quickly. Not so with Breed.

One thing that bugged me about this novel was the poor grammar (on the part of the omnisient narrator/author, not the characters) and bad word choices. Twice one of the protagonists says something to the effect of "Here comes the calvary" rather than "cavalry." There were several more errors, all of which were minor, but quickly took me out of the story.

If you're not bugged by little things like that, you might enjoy the story. I thought the premise was a good one.

I enjoyed the Crota, but I couldn’t finish this one

I grew up outside St. Augustine. So I was excited when I finished The Crota to get another cheesy horror novel set somewhere I’m familiar with. Goingback knows so much about the paranormal history there. I was also excited to maybe learn some more of the Native history of the city.

I was a little concerned when I realized one of the main protagonists was a woman, since the women in the Crota were one-dimensional prop pieces. But, hey, the only reason Daisy in The Great Gatsby sounds like a real person at all is that Fitzgerald stole her dialogue out of Zelda’s diary. I can stomach poorly written women. The narrator speaking all the women’s lines in the same raspy inflection with no regard for the written delivery descriptions did not help much.

What I did not expect was being subjected to graphic tentacle rape at 9am on my way to work. And I certainly didn’t expect Goingback to character assassinate the rape victim. The other (male) characters who had been murdered by the monster got at least somewhat sympathetic backstories. The previous victim was drunk in public at 2am, but he had a horrible chronic pain condition to self-medicate. This waitress? A litterer. A sloppy, dime store novel, drunk broad, spilling her margarita as she decided which men on a list she would bang. She, so drunk after two drinks that she literally couldn’t see straight, basically propositioned the monster herself. I was disappointed to see such old, old horror tropes as punishing a woman for walking alone at night, being sexual, and drinking.

But I was disappointed most of all by the graphic rape scene. There were many moments where Goingback could have cut the scene without any loss of information, but he chose to show the entire scene in graphic detail. If it had been in a movie, it would have been rated X. I didn’t download this book for tentacle porn. I wish I could unread this.
