I used to work in the only place in Manhattan that had use for a witch with very little magic - like me - until my boss kicked me out over a job gone bad (not my fault, I swear). Pure boredom and the lack of company got to my head fast. I was so desperate, I took a delivery job from a complete stranger. It was supposed to be an easy job, clean and simple. It was anything but.

Now, there's a price on my head, and my own coworkers are hunting me down. My mad fighting skills alone aren't going to be enough to keep me alive. Looks like the time has come to dig out my mother's bones and complete the ritual that will finally ignite the magic in my bones - if I even make it that far.

She never wanted me to be part of the paranormal world, but she made sure I was prepared for it anyway. I'm finally about to find out why.

half way through is far enough

I was really enjoying this book until the MC found her out her full identity, then it was nothing but pre-teen drama. I get the point of the identity crisis but all the obstacles before she found that out, she took a second to feel all her feels then moved on. I just can't with the drama over something the character should have embraced and used to her advantage.

Half 4 star and half 2 star

First half the story is good the character is tough and intelligent. The second half the story is discombobulated and the main character acts like a 14 year old brat that whines constantly and has no common sense or logic.

Not great, but enjoyable

The first entry was ok. I liked that it didn’t turn into urban fantasy “erotica” (as the majority of recent crop of what is labeled as Urban Fantasy has become). This is NOT “Dresden Files”; but it’s decent enough. I like the “witch system” of different factions of witches and their abilities. There is very little world building (actually it’s non-existent) except for few references to NYC. No history of how the supernatural happened, apparently it just did…because. There is also no involvement with “regular, I.e. non-magical” population. Just the internal politics of the shifter/fae/witches, etc. kind of annoying the usage of “fairy” to describe the Fae. Weird and incorrect. The writer is also obsessed with “sweat”; everyone (literally) is constantly described as “sweating/sweat beading/sweat running, etc”; I would prefer it if the writer’s descriptions were less “moist”. All in all this is a step above the “cozy” genre.

I’m really surprised this book got some bad reviews. I loved it! I loved the world building and the drama and everything. Winter was a badass! And the surprises were just perfect. Elise Arsenault was a great narrator. I’ll be continuing the series!
