Will Bagley
Acerca de esta escucha
The massacre at Mountain Meadows on September 11, 1857, was the single most violent attack on a wagon train in the 30-year history of the Oregon and California trails. Yet it has been all but forgotten. Will Bagley's Blood of the Prophets is an award-winning, riveting account of the attack on the Baker-Fancher wagon train by Mormons in the local militia and a few Paiute Indians. Based on extensive investigation of the events surrounding the murder of over 120 men, women, and children, and drawing from a wealth of primary sources, Bagley explains how the murders occurred, reveals the involvement of territorial governor Brigham Young, and explores the subsequent suppression and distortion of events related to the massacre by the Mormon Church and others.

Historia
In the Fall of 1857, 120 California-bound emigrants were killed in lonely Mountain Meadows in southern Utah; only 18 young children were spared. The men on the ground after the bloody deed took an oath that they would never mention the event again, either in public or in private. The leaders of the Mormon church also counseled silence. The first report, soon after the massacre, described it as an Indian onslaught at which a few white men were present, only one of whom, John D. Lee, was actually named.

Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

Compared to the Puritans, Mormons have rarely gotten their due, often treated as fringe cultists or marginalized polygamists unworthy of serious examination. In Kingdom of Nauvoo, Benjamin E. Park excavates the brief, tragic life of a lost Mormon city, demonstrating that the Mormons are essential to understanding American history writ large. Using newly accessible sources, Park re-creates the Mormons' 1839 flight from Missouri to Illinois.

Founder of the largest indigenous Christian church in American history, Joseph Smith published the 584-page Book of Mormon when he was 23 and went on to organize a church, found cities, and attract thousands of followers before his violent death at age 38. Historia
Brigham Young was a rough-hewn craftsman from New York whose impoverished and obscure life was electrified by the Mormon faith. He trudged around the United States and England to gain converts for Mormonism, spoke in spiritual tongues, married more than 50 women, and eventually transformed a barren desert into his vision of the Kingdom of God. While previous accounts of his life have been distorted by hagiography or polemical exposé, John Turner provides a fully realized portrait of a colossal figure in American religion, politics, and westward expansion.

Historia
On June 27, 1844, a mob stormed the jail in the dusty frontier town of Carthage, Illinois. Clamorous and angry, they were hunting down a man they saw as a grave threat to their otherwise quiet lives: The founding prophet of Mormonism, Joseph Smith. They wanted blood. At thirty-nine years old, Smith had already lived an outsized life. In addition to starting the Church of Latter-Day Saints and creating his own "Golden Bible" - the Book of Mormon - he had worked as a water-dowser and treasure hunter.

Ordained as an apostle in 1906, David O. McKay served as president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1951 until his death in 1970. Under his leadership, the church experienced unparalleled growth - nearly tripling in total membership - and becoming a significant presence throughout the world. The first book to draw upon the David O. McKay Papers at the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah, David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism focuses primarily on the years of McKay's presidency.

A stunning and sure to be controversial book that pieces together, through more than two dozen 19th-century diaries, letters, albums, minute books, and quilts left by first-generation Latter-day Saints, or Mormons, the never before told story of the earliest days of the women of Mormon "plural marriage", whose right to vote in the state of Utah was given to them by a Mormon-dominated legislature as an outgrowth of polygamy in 1870, 50 years ahead of the vote nationally ratified by Congress.

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos.

Ezra Taft Benson is perhaps the most controversial apostle-president in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For nearly 50 years, he delivered impassioned sermons in Utah and elsewhere, mixing religion with ultraconservative right-wing political views and conspiracy theories. His teachings inspired Mormon extremists to stockpile weapons, predict the end of the world, and commit acts of violence against their government.

As president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and Utah’s first territorial governor, Brigham Young (1801-77) shaped a religion, a migration, and the American West. He led the Saints to Utah, guided the establishment of 350 settlements, and inspired the Mormons as they weathered unimaginable trials and hardships. In this new biography, historian Thomas G. Alexander draws on a lifetime of research to provide an evenhanded view of Young and his leadership.

Among all the various figures in 19th century America who left controversial legacies, it is hard to find one as influential as Joseph Smith (1805-1844), the founder of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mormonism, and the Latter-Day Saint movement. Revered as a prophet on the level of Moses by some, reviled as a perpetrator of large-scale fraud by others, what everyone can agree on is that Joseph Smith founded a religious movement that played a crucial role in the settlement of the West, especially in Utah.

According to Joseph Smith, in September of 1823, an angel appeared to him and directed him to a hill near his home. Buried there, Smith found a box containing a stack of thin metal sheets, gold in color and covered with what appeared to be ancient engravings. Exactly four years later, the angel instructed Smith to translate the plates into English. When the text was published, a new religion was born.

Founder of the largest indigenous Christian church in American history, Joseph Smith published the 584-page Book of Mormon when he was 23 and went on to organize a church, found cities, and attract thousands of followers before his violent death at age 38. Richard Bushman, an esteemed cultural historian and a practicing Mormon, moves beyond the popular stereotype of Smith as a colorful fraud to explore his personality, his relationships with others, and how he received revelations.

Though Joseph Smith's run for president is now best remembered for its gruesome end, the renegade campaign was revolutionary. Smith called for the total abolition of slavery, the closure of the country's penitentiaries, and the reestablishment of a national bank to stabilize the economy. But Smith's most important proposal was for an expansion of protections for religious minorities. At a time when the Bill of Rights did not apply to individual states, Smith sought to empower the federal government to protect minorities when states failed to do so.

"I was one of 28 children born to my dad and his three wives. Indoctrinated to believe that the outside world was evil, and that I resided among the righteous, I was destined to marry a man chosen for me by the Prophet. I would then live in harmony with my sister-wives, bear many children, and obey and serve my future husband in this life and throughout eternity. But my innocence didn't last long." Flora goes on from there to tell the dramatic true story of how she ultimately escaped and has been rescuing women and children from the FLDS.

Mormonism Unvailed, authored by Eber D. Howe and published in 1834, presents one of the first published critiques and investigations into the origins and credibility of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS Church or Mormon Church) and its founder, Joseph Smith. The book elucidates the skepticism and criticism of early Mormonism, disputing its authenticity and alleging fraudulent and deceptive practices within its early formation.

balanced and fair
I enjoyed the book. the narrator miss pronounced some of the distinctly Mormon words (Limhi and others) but I love his tone and accent. the author seemed to include all the facts at hand at the time and explained them in plain terms without an attempt to divert blame.

Sad part of US History
Audible sales sometimes help me pick up titles I may not normally look to add since I already own the book. This narrator proved oddly effective, given the subject matter as he reads it, is how I would envision the attitudes of the perpetrators - very blunt and matter of fact in their thinking. I grew up in NW AR and have known descendants of the massacre all my life. The Mountain Meadows memorial is one I have seen and known about all my life. It is now over 150 years after the fact and I am still being told the murders were justified by people who have heard the history only from the church side. It happened at at odd time in LDS church and US history and makes for an interesting story of power in the early days of Utah. The extent the church leaders went to to assert and extend their rights as God’s chosen people sound oddly like current political rhetoric. Meanwhile, The victims are still a minor footnote in history that most people have never heard of the event.

Magnificient History on the Mtn. Meadows Massacre
If you could sum up Blood of the Prophets in three words, what would they be?
Very well researched!
What other book might you compare Blood of the Prophets to and why?
Hard to compare as I haven't read others like this.
Have you listened to any of Charles Henderson Norman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No this is the first one. His narration took me a little while to get used to, but it grew on me steadily and and throughly enjoyed his presentation in the end. Very well read.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No this wasn't possible as it was a long book, and it contained a lot of factual detail and historical reference. If I had 20 hours free one day I certainly would have tried.
Any additional comments?
I would like to compliment the author Will Bagley on a magnificient acheivement in writing this book. It was absolutely brimming with well researched details, and seemed very even handed in both it's criticisms of the massacre and it's considerations on the events to lead to it. Anyone with the slightest inerest in LDS history or older US history in general should defiately read this book. Brilliant.

Great book about a sad story
If you could sum up Blood of the Prophets in three words, what would they be?
damn crying shame
What did you like best about this story?
The fact that so much of it takes place in the area that I live.
What does Charles Henderson Norman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His narration was really good, and made it seem first hand.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
no, not really
Any additional comments?
This is such a sad story that more people should know about. It was especially interesting for me, as I live in this area. It was something I had always heard of, but didn't know many details about. I learned so much about this area, and the history of my town.

Uncomfortable History
Thorough review of an unfortunate historical event that happened when the LDS church was young. Bagley offers conclusion to answerable questions, and possible solutions to the, thus far, unanswerable questions. Unreachable evidence exists, behind locked doors.

Will Bagley Hits Another One Out of the Park
Would you consider the audio edition of Blood of the Prophets to be better than the print version?
No
Who was your favorite character and why?
Brigham Young
What aspect of Charles Henderson Norman’s performance would you have changed?
He needs to learn how to pronounce words like Lemhi.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I liked Will's handling of the background to the massacre.
Any additional comments?
Will Bagley is the best historian of the Western Trails since Dale Morgan. This is a very important book and lays to rest many of the myths perpetuated about this historic event.
