Gunned down on a busy Boston street, bestselling mystery author Sabrina Spencer is left clinging to life. Media speculation suggests a deranged fan as the shooter. But was Sabrina really the intended target?
For Del Honeycutt, a chilling link emerges between Sabrina’s shooting and that of his father’s murder three years earlier. Discovering that his father was leading a secret life, he digs deeper, and the clues lead Del down a dangerous and deadly path.

When Sabrina is shot on a busy street, police suspect a deranged fan. But it soon becomes clear the bullet was meant for Del. The guilt he feels is soon joined by anger then curiosity when it appears the shooting is connected to Del’s murdered father, whom he was estranged from for most of his life.
The pacing is quick but smooth as more attempts are made on Del’s life as he tries to figure out why. He’s being followed by shadowy Chinese men, his homes are bugged, one of his homes is blown up—nearly killing Sabrina and Mo—he has to return to Fairfield… several times and the name of the mysterious John Bruno keeps popping up the deeper Del digs, even connected to his mother.
Though she’s healing from the gunshot wound, Sabrina is plagued with migraines from her head hitting the ground. With Del still recovering from the alligator attack—and subsequent injuries from the continued attempts on his life—the two are not 100%, but it doesn’t stop them from giving their all and being there for each other.
Relationships and interactions are as important as the mystery in the Lies Series, and the author does a good job with each in the story, but for me, the best… and most humorous, is the “friendship” between Del and Jack, who even share a man hug!
Del learns more about his father’s true nature during the investigation than he ever knew—or wanted to know–before his death, and how his selfish motives cost not only his life but could cost Del and Sabrina theirs.
I own digital copies of the Lies Series, but I keep coming back to the audiobooks because of the great narration! The narrator continues to do a great job of characterization without sounding cartoonish or robotic. His delivery of humor, sarcasm, suspense, or backstory is on point and kept me in the story.
While you’re sheltering in place, get to know Del Honeycutt, Sabrina Spencer, and their family of friends. I highly recommend this book and the series.
Enjoy!

Blood Lies focuses on Del, and he just may get more than he bargained for as he digs into his family’s past. Of course, poor Del can’t catch a break, and he seems to find trouble even when he’s still recuperating from the last mess he was in. This time around, the bullets fly at every turn, and it seems like no one is safe. I think Del is one of the unluckiest reluctant investigators I’ve read, and I absolutely love him to pieces – not as much as Sabrina does, but you get the point. Speaking of Sabrina, she and Del are complete opposites on the surface, but they are so good together. I love the banter between them, and Del’s dry sense of humor is terrific.
I can’t talk about a book in this series without mentioning narrator Greg Hernandez. The inflections and cadence in these books are exactly how I hear Del in my head. To me, Greg Hernandez’s voice for Del is Del. It’s as simple as that, and it works wonderfully. Honestly, I can’t imagine anyone else voicing any of the characters in this series. Del, Sabrina, Jack, and Moe – Hernandez brings them to life for me.
All in all, this fifth book in The Lies series is another great listen in a series of great listens. We get great characters, a fast-paced storyline, some very well-timed twists in an entertaining mystery, plenty of danger, and even a bit of romance as Del and Sabrina’s relationship grows.
Great addition to the Lies series

As always, the fab four are reunited for this latest mystery.(That's adding Mo and Jack - Seymour - to the happy couple of Del & Sabrina.)
After the previous books, this plot seemed more straightforward in that there were fewer subplots, and the mystery less convoluted. Shame, as I quite like convoluted, and it felt as though it was all over before I'd got myself comfy.
So, what happened?
In a nutshell, Sabrina is shot by mistake, the bullet intended for Del. Why? You may well ask. Del learns some uncomfortable truths about his father whose own murder is at the centre of this mystery. You see, it would appear that Mr Honeycutt Senior was a spy, working both for and against the American and Chinese governments, and something these two sides want appears to have died with him
Del faces yet more attacks while trying to fathom out what his father could possibly have that is so eagerly wanted. He's followed by a Chinese man using a numner of stolen cars, his home is bugged (more than once) and another home is blown up, leaving Sabrina and Mo in hospital.
It is the mysterious town of Fairfield that draws him back repeatedly, to a house his father owned (unbeknownst to Del) and it is here that the clues are found. Who is John Bruno? The name - and the man - keep cropping up, as do others connected to his father's past as a professor / spy. In his investigations, Del learns a lot about the kind of man his father was, and how his actions now impact on Del's life ...and Sabrina's too.
Blood Lies, in my opinion, has a simpler plot and lacks the pace of previous books. Despite that, the story is still intriguing and holds together well as the truth unravels. As always, the narration by Greg Hernandez is top notch. Having heard him throughout the series, it was so easy to just sink back into this one and know exactly who was who.
Such a great series with characters you cannot help but like, interactions that are consistent and believable, and intriguing plots throughout. I'm going to miss these guys ...unless, of course the author has more in store. I'm going to suggest a "never say never" approach is called for to avoid unnecessary reader disappointment ;)
Delve in. You won't regret a minute.
