The Bible in Historical Context
I received this free audiobook and realized it is more than just a deep devotional reading. This was one of the most educational materials I have read in quite some time. Who knew a book about the bible to could stoke a re-interest and a deeper understanding in The Greatest Story Every Told?
There's no doubt the Bible is a complex narrative that has opened debate for centuries. Is everything or anything true? Who wrote the bible? When was the bible written? What is the bible trying to tell us? No or limited exposure to the bible? No problem. No or limited understanding of the bible? No problem. Great exposure to the bible? No problem. Advanced understanding of the bible? No problem. This book is for you. Dr. Phalen explains in layman's terms and weaves a timeline through history to help us learn and (for those who already know) have a deeper understanding of the bible. This is an honest and unbiased depiction exploring fact vs. allegory vs. history vs. mythology. Dr. John Phalen presents the bible in both Old and New Testament thematically and in historical context. He has no agenda to make you think one way or another but to merely present all the historical evidence as well as theories and allows the reader to draw our own conclusions.
Dr. Phalen posits theories on who may or may have not written each book and where the stories may or may not have originated. Gives specific time frames events occurred and provides connections and summaries. I learned a lot in this companion to the bible. This is the book I wished for but did not exist until now. It helps me understand the bible in a manner that should be used when teaching the bible in studies or for sermons. There is a great need now to introduce the bible and its teachings to humanity, and this is the tool.
Narration is very clear and easy to listen to, like being spoken to instead of lectured. It is a quick and easy 'read' and whether you know little or a lot of the bible, you will learn and understand more. Turn on the narration and relax, play it in the car on a nice drive, or play it on a quiet Sunday. This is the book you're looking for.
