A card counter and a rumored assassin gamble on working together in this thrilling romance from a "charming, clever, and engaging storyteller" (Sarah MacLean, New York Times).

He should have thrown her out. But when club owner Alexander Lavoie catches a mysterious blonde counting cards at his vingt-et-un table, he's more intrigued than angry. He has to see more of this beauty—in his club, in his office, in his bed. But first he'll have to devise a proposition she can't turn down.

Gossip said he was an assassin. Common sense told her to stay away. But Angelique Archer was desperate, and Lavoie's club offered a surefire way to make quick money—until she got caught. Instead of throwing her out though, the devil offers her a deal: come work for him. Refusing him means facing starvation, but with a man so sinfully handsome and fiercely protective, keeping things professional might prove impossible . . .

Loved this whole series. Intriguing characters, hot scenes, and a twist I didn’t see coming! Excellent!

Didn’t see that coming! Love it!

I enjoyed reading this series, but wasn't quite as happy with the narration.

I really liked that all three stories in this series featured strong, level-headed, capable female characters. The only real drawback was the ridiculousness of every female lead becoming muddled, tongue tied, and totally befuddled because a man looks at, touches, and/or kisses her. Even during the Regency Era, most women weren't that stupid. It's something every female Regency author writes, and it needs to stop. It has become so formulistic that it's beginning to border on being insulting to female intelligence. I would expect such brainless characterization from a male author, but really, ladies, all of you can do much better.

For the most part, I like Ashford McNab's narration, except when she drops into that breathy, can barely hear her whispery voice for different scenes. Then it becomes annoying and a little creepy. I found myself wanting to yell, "omg just speak in a normal voice".

The series is an entertaining read and a good listen, if you can overlook the occasional creep factor in the narration.

Enjoyable finish to series

Loved how the characters from the previous books in this series were interwoven into this story. The heroine and hero of the story were great characters. Very interesting. Highly recommend not only this story but the entire series.

Great story and performance

Enjoyed it. Not sure why the title mentions a Duke? No main character is a Duke.

What duke?

I enjoyed the first two books, but this was my absolute favorite! I loved the heroine, was already besotted with the hero, and it was great fun to see (almost) all of the usual cast of Chegarre & Associates turn up in the course of the story. Love love love!

The best in the series!!!

I enjoyed this audiobook. Kelly Bowen wrote a good story. The characters were so well written that I absolutely despised Gerald (Angelique's brother) for his stupidity. Pacing was good and there were no unnecessary conflict between the lead characters just because. I enjoyed the performance too although some of the voices could have been better. I am happy this was my first Kelly Bowen book. A great introduction.

A great listen

This was just as great as the other two books. It’s about mystery, murder, romance, sex, all rolled into one and so well written I hated to see it end. And, oh no, it’s a three book series? Although, I guess that’s for the best. It’s so much better to read a trilogy than to try and read 20 or 25+ books in a series. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Bowen writes next. I hope it has all the elements this trilogy had. It's so much better than a plain old romance.

I loved Angelique being a math genius and Alex being so amazed by it. I loved how they met and her fear of being thrown out of his gaming hell, and Alex being so drawn to her it scared him to death. And I loved the mystery about what happened to her family’s fortune.

I couldn’t stand Angelique’s idiot brother Gerald, or his two friends Seaton (creep) and Burleigh (soooo whiny.) Ms. Bowen wrote them both perfectly.

It was nice to see “Duchess” and Alderidge from the first book, and I adored Roderick, he was such a cute kid.

LOL, and I loved the part in the Tower of London. Alex and Angelique were simply marvelous together. I just loved every word in this book. Especially what happened to the bad guys.

There was some seriously explicit sex in this book, but NOT erotic. It was very romantic. And there was no swearing to speak of.

As to the narrator: Ashford McNab is awesome! Her voices and emotions are amazing, voices that match the characters perfectly. Seaton sounded like an arrogant jerk and Burleigh was so whiny sounding, it was too funny. And Alex sounded sexy as hell. Perfect narration.

Awesome read and Awesome narration..

The characters well well written and it took me a while to figure out the bad guy so all in all a great listen.

Good listen

The language is quite modern with phrases such as, I’m here for you”. One sentence uttered be an educated character started with “Me and …”. Good story with bad syntax.

No effort to be true to the Regency period.
