A stunning, lyrical novel set in the rolling foothills of the Appalachians about a young girl and the family truths that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

“A girl comes of age against the knife.”

So begins the story of Betty Carpenter. Born in a bathtub in 1954 to a white mother and a Cherokee father, Betty is the sixth of eight siblings. The world they inhabit in the rural town of Breathed, Ohio, is one of poverty and violence—both from outside the family and, devastatingly, from within. But despite the hardships she faces, Betty is resilient. Her curiosity about the natural world, her fierce love for her sisters, and her father’s brilliant stories are kindling for the fire of her own imagination, and in the face of all to which she bears witness, Betty discovers an escape: she begins to write.

Inspired by generations of her family, Tiffany McDaniel sets out to free the past by delivering this heartbreaking yet magical story—a remarkable novel that establishes her as one of the most important voices in American fiction.

Did you love Educated, or Where The Crawdads Sing... this book is just as good- if not better. Beautifully written, a testament of shining through a rough childhood and the power of love between a father and daughter... Don’t want to give anything away... but all I can say is this is definitely the best book I’ve read this year.

This story is brilliantly written and performed. It is also not for the faint of heart. Brutal and beautiful and dark and painful. Betty is one of the most memorable protagonists in modern times.

Haunting and unforgettable.

I loved every second of this story, even the cringy difficult parts because it feel gritty and real. Excellent narration. Highly recommend, but be forewarned— there are some descriptions that are unpleasant, just like life itself.

Raw with feeling and description

I read some of the reviews before listening. This is an incredibly sad and disturbing story filled with violence and hate but what stood out to me the most was the love intertwined with all of the misery. Someone mentioned it makes sex out to be bad or ugly. Well sometimes it is. This book is filled with beautiful language and imagery. It's thought provoking. I myself will be moving on to Tiffany McDaniel's other works.

Beautiful ugliness

This book made me feel every emotion on the spectrum - I absolutely oved it. Excellent writing and character development. I couldn’t wait to pick back up where I left off each day until I finished it.

I listened to the audiobook while reading and the narrator was a genuine storyteller. Her range for the many characters in the book was amazing and so was her emotional delivery of the material.

This book will stick with me for a long time

So heartwarming. So gut wrenching. Probably one of my favorite books ever. I’m sad it’s over and I won’t be able to forget Betty.

I have no words.

Absolutely loved this story, the protagonist, and her stories of her dad and sisters. It does have some potentially triggering content, but still one of the best books I’ve read in awhile

Beautiful & heavy
