In a house designed for manipulation, paranoia, and power plays, sixteen strangers are cut off from the outside world—watched every second by cameras, judged by millions.

Welcome to Big Brother. A show ahead of its time, it was once dismissed as fluff television. Now this voyeuristic reality show has quietly become a cultural juggernaut.

But what are the costs of turning human lives into entertainment? What kind of psychological toll does it take to be put in isolation, under constant surveillance, in a perpetual state of suspicion? And what does it say about us as a society that we love to watch it unfold?

Behind the Mirror: Inside the World of Big Brother peels back the layers of the historic franchise and dives deep into the game. Through years of live footage, online discourse, and controversial castings, this eye-opening book unpacks how Big Brother has shaped and exposed societal dynamics around race, gender, identity, power, and surveillance. It's the story of a show that thrives in chaos and reveals a reflection of us all. Whether you're a diehard fan or an unimpressed skeptic, Behind the Mirror will challenge what you thought you knew about reality TV.

I watched every season of Big Brother as a casual viewer until I found Taran’s daily updates. I now am more interested in Taran’s insights more than the edited version as seen on tv. I better understand that ‘reality’ tv is not all that real. We cannot hide our worst characteristics and be real. Great job summarizing a complicated ‘game’ show!

Taran captures all the epic moments

I loved the way the history of each year was represented into the larger story of the strategy and antics used to get to the end of the game. I cried and I laughed listening to this. I'd cheer each time to hear my favorite players stories being told. I say outloud...omg I totally remember seeing that. I appreciate that one of my favorite seasons WASNT glossed over in typical CBS fashion #bb15 and then swelled with pride at the recounting of Taylor Hales climb to triumph. Bravo! Thank you Taran, as I also own the hard cover version, I preferred your actual voice to my own as I read.

My obsession broken down by my other obsession; Taran Armstrong of "the Big Brother live feeds".

If you want something that clearly defines why big brother is a beautiful mess this is for you. If every summer you change your routine to watch a bright sound stage where players wear sunglasses indoors due to the lights this is for you.

Taran does such a great job of showing the evolution of the game and eras that have happened. He explains casting, internet spaces and players that all come together for a game that is truly lovely in its simplicity and deeply satisfying.

Thank you for describing my addiction to games

This book was so well done. Taran somehow provided a chronological and thematic look at the game and show of Big Brother, while seamlessly peppering in his personal anecdotes that color his evolving relationship with the show over the years. The personal anecdotes truly took this book up a notch for me. As a long time fan and live-feeder who doesn’t have people in my circle who get my obsession, Taran’s stories made me feel known. Taran also doesn’t shy away from the ugly side of the show, which makes the book that much more compelling to me and is what will likely bring me back to this book in the future.

Will be listening again!!!

My feelings were all over the place with this journey down memory lane which, for me, began when I was fresh out of college and a new mother who’d returned home and began enjoying the show with my own mother. Remembering the feelings I had during some of the different moments included in this book, being introduced to moments I didn’t experience in real time because I’d returned to school, the history, the background, the inspirations, the joys, the disappointments, and the excitement of it all. Taran, thank you so much for this book.
