His memoir, Worth Defending, chronicles his over 40 years' involvement with the Gracie family and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, including the almost 20 years he spent working closely alongside Rorion helping to grow Jiu-Jitsu through the Gracie Garages, the challenge matches, the founding of the Gracie Academy, and the inception of the UFC.

To develop an adversarial relationship to an aspect of one's self gets nowhere good fast. That which we resist, persists. The skillful path forward is to walk the ego onto the mat with us, like a child, and dissolve its stronghold through awareness.

This is a manual designed to get white belts to competent blue belts in as fast a time as possible. Zen Jiu Jitsu is more a rendition of concepts than techniques. This is the simplest and easiest way to break down and simplify the many and varied ideas, philosophies, and combinations in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu arsenal. For both competition Jiu Jitsu and self-defense Jiu Jitsu, most white belts need to fully understand the concepts, but they can be VERY confusing!

It’s like a follow-along story and every chapter makes you experience the journey. Roy Dean has incorporated the samurai’s soul into this book. Highly recommend

Incredible!
I already read the hard copy several times. Even more enjoyable listening to Roy reading the audible version. Cannot recommend enough.

Good but a little flawed
Roy's story was good but there was a little too much info about his love life and music career. would've been a 5 if it was focused a bit more on the bjj journey.

Outstanding reflections on the process!
As a Martial Artist with several Black Belts (including BJJ) and a gym owner, I loved this book. I’ve always been impressed with Roy Dean’s material and outlook on the art. I enjoyed hearing his story and loved that it was read by him. It was meaningful and fun. Thank you!

Autobiography of a black belt.
This is an entertaining account of Roy Dean’s journey through BJJ. He share his successes, failures and the things he’s learned through BJJ. Being a BJJ student I enjoyed this book.

Nice insight into the man’s journey
Written well, narrated well. Having been familiar with the stuart cooper event that blew up at the time online, roy’s placement and of the women in his journey makes him out to be a bit strange imo. I’m here for his martial arts journey, not his description of Scandinavian women. Overall would recommend

Excellent memoir from a true teacher
