Resumen del Editor

After serving his Brooklyn district for years, Congressman Sullivan discovers that his once comfortable Irish-American majority has given way to a diverse district of blacks and Hispanics. Challenged by a more liberal opponent, he tries everything possible to maintain his seat only to painfully learn that he and his views are outdated and irrelevant to today's world. But he doesn't bow out of the race gracefully, and the fierce ensuing campaign brings new insights to the meaning of democracy and the terrors of a swiftly changing world.

If, as it is said, all politics are local, this compelling story transcends politics and puts a human face on how the American democratic system really operates. Unforgettable characters and a powerful plot offer a remarkable and tense story of how tragic endings affect new beginnings.

A tale of politicians

If I am honest, I don't remember why did I get myself this book, as it's not my kind of reading, TBH. That said, this is an interesting tale, well-written and riveting. The portrait of the characters is well-done, although it's far from being flattering.

An old congressman contemplating the end of an era; a newcomer learning the level of soul-selling needed to win in the political field; a dark tale of hopelessness and desperation. If you are looking for an uplifting story, this is not for you, that's for sure.

I don't know if we are meant to feel sympathy for the old man, but I don't felt it. He spent his life lost in the game of winning, absolutely oblivious to the pain and horror of the life of those whom he was supposed to represent and defend. And the newcomer isn't better.

This is a good story, just not one that will leave you feeling hopeful :(

Will Tulin does a great job with the narration.
