A confident person attracts others and has the ability to influence and even inspire them. You know you’ve seen it before, that one person everyone wants to get to know. Why? Because people that are confident are often seen as attractive and successful. Self-confidence is linked to almost everything we want in life, whether it's success at work, fulfilling relationships, and happiness. Low self-confidence is the common denominator in a large number of problems. Loneliness often stems from a fear of approaching others because a person doesn't feel attractive or interesting enough. The fear of rejection holds them back. Even seemingly successful people can suffer the effects of low self-confidence, often in surprising ways. One of the causes of crashing and burning, is taking on too many projects because you feel like an impostor - overworking is one way to compensate for that feeling. Most people think that confidence is just something that you’re born with – you either have it or you don’t. The truth is that confidence can be developed like any other skill. Unfortunately, we aren’t taught how confidence works, we think we have to wait until we feel confident in order to act confidently. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s a Catch 22, if you don’t feel confident, you’re not likely to try anything new. What is Self-Confidence? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as confidence in one’s self, abilities, and powers. It is the state and quality of being certain. We all need to be certain about our qualities, abilities, and judgments for us to succeed in life. If we are uncertain, it becomes difficult to convince people to be certain about us. Great! Now let’s delve into it a bit more. The belief we have in ourselves and in our abilities is self-confidence. It consists of what we feel and think about ourselves. These beliefs can change based on the state we’re in and how we respond to the events that happen around us. It’s not uncommon to feel confident in some situations, and feel less confident in others. Self-confidence is influenced by the events of the past and how we recall them. Remembering a past success will have a different outcome in terms of confidence compared to when you remember a past failure. So, when we say that someone is self-confident, it means the person feels good about who they are, and also feels good about their abilities to achieve the things they want to accomplish. Self-confidence can help you survive any circumstance or situation. This doesn't mean that your life will be free of pain, problems, and challenges. Self-confidence can only help deal with and weather these situations. But it can certainly allow you to avoid succumbing to depression, apathy, and helplessness during tough times. What You’ll Learn: Setting the Stage In Chapter 1, we'll delve into what self-confidence really is, theories about where it comes from, and understand the benefits of being a confident person.
