Angelina Busto is a pastry cook in New York City. Her specialty is cupcakes. She’s in her late 20s, and single. She’s under pressure from her Italian mother to marry and propagate. Though she has dated several men from The Sons of Italy lodge, she has not been successful to find one who wishes to settle down and sire a family. A friend from her school days. Martha Eifert, has joined a convent in the rural town of Sublimity, Oregon. In the town, she encounters a widower with a minor daughter. She sees Harlan Graves as a potential match for Angelina and writes to determine her interest. Angelina agrees and Martha persuades Harlan to fund a visit. Harlan runs a small cattle ranch near the Pudding River. He’s a full time “cowboy” and a part-time preacher. He makes frequent contributions of food to the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, who have dubbed him the PRINCE OF PUDDING RIVER. Since the death of his wife, he has been unable to manage their daughter, Bernice. His solution to the child’s social problems is to ship her off to a boarding school in Portland. She’s ill-placed there, as well, because of pre-teen peer pressure and a domineering headmistress. During Angelina’s visit, she requests to go to Portland to meet the child. The child identifies a kindred spirit; after her father and his guest leave, and following a clash with the headmistress, she jumps a train and chases after. Once home, the cause of Bernice’s social difficulties is unearthed, and Angelina assists a solution. In New York, Angelina’s mother is hospitalized and she is summoned to return. The question of joining with the rancher is unresolved, so it is doubtful that she will return. The mother will ultimately die of pneumonia. Bernice persuades her father to chase after Angelina. He does. They marry. She returns, now as the PRINCESS OF PUDDING RIVER.
