Auschwitz was one of the first books to bring the full horror of the Nazi death camps to the American public; this is, as the New York Review of Books said, "the best brief account of the Auschwitz experience available."

When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they sent virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz. A Jew and a medical doctor, the prisoner Dr. Miklos Nyiszli was spared death for a grimmer fate: to perform "scientific research" on his fellow inmates under the supervision of the man who became known as the infamous "Angel of Death" - Dr. Josef Mengele. Nyiszli was named Mengele's personal research pathologist. In that capacity he also served as physician to the Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners who worked exclusively in the crematoriums and were routinely executed after four months. Miraculously, Nyiszli survived to give this horrifying and sobering account.

Yes, but not because it was good.

Have you ever robbed a grave? This is a book that might be a best seller in the "Skinhead World", but if you have never experienced the underbelly of the Devil himself, stay away from this book, as it will make you ill, and if it does not, then you might need help.

GRIPPING, TERRIFYING, AND REAL

Wow, what a horrifying account of the atrocities of Auschwitz and the concentration/extermination camps. He was, in a way, one of the lucky ones there. He had food, clothing, a bed, and was not involved in the hard labor (for the most part).
He was one of the special "Sonderkommandos," who had much better living conditions but were exposed to the nastiest side of live in the camps - dealing with the bodies. After 4 months the hundreds of sonderkommandos were routinely exterminated, as they were deemed to know "too much."

This book also gave us a little more insight into Dr. Mengele, who is both terrifying and fascinating, but by all accounts a monster. It's amazing all of the atrocities by the Nazis largely went undiscovered until the worst of it had passed.

EVERYONE these days calling conservatives NAZIS should READ THIS BOOK and others on the subject before making such ridiculous accusations.

AMAZING AUDIOBOOK!

Pronunciation

It was such a great book. I borrowed a copy from a friend but could never find time to read it so resorted to audiobook. Being fluent in German my only con to the reader of this story was the lack of even amateur pronunciation of the German language, I was very disappointed with that. Overall the book was great, but the narration wasn't great

Wow! I had no idea...... I hope never to have to read about a war like this again, nor my grandchildren or their grandchildren.

Interesting but too perfect character

I liked this story and to see the perspective of someone who got to experience the horrors first hand. I definitely recommend it . My only critique is that the doctor always made perfect decisions, and never flawed (there is only one mention of it what I can remember). This undervalued his character and almost made him seem like inhumane, and 'too perfect'.
