Great in book form, even better in audio!

What made the experience of listening to Among the Living the most enjoyable?

The narrator did an excellent job assigning different vocal personalities to his characters, I really appreciate that. I've read this series and knew it would be tough to find the right narrator, but Gomez is perfect. Vic's personality comes shining through, but my favorite spot on voice was for Warwick.

What other book might you compare Among the Living to and why?

Gosh that's hard, Jordan Castillo Price has such a unique voice in fiction. This is contemporary but not, believable psi-fi, moody, edgy, and hot all at once. Every part of my brain is fully engaged in her story telling. Maybe Jordan Hawk or early Anne Rice would be comparable?

No.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Many, but the power and confidence of Jacob paralleled to Vic's seeming insecurity is interesting. Particularly since Vic was such a rock for his new partner during her crisis. IF that makes any sense.

Any additional comments?

This is so much more than what some might expect of m/m genre. Yes it's a romance, kind of, but more than that it's enthralling, and imaginative.

This was an interesting, entertaining, nicely performed mystery, paranormal read. I was bummed about Lisa, I liked her character a lot. Good audio

I enjoyed the gruffness that the narrator dredged up for Bayne which really helped you get to know the character

I like the fresh take on the genre! Interesting view on checks and balances for the psychic use in law enforcment

I enjoy this narrator I believe this is the first one I've listened to but I would do so again!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely. Once I got into it I was eager to continue

what a sexy voice

I loved this book it was the right length for me it was fun to listen to and I didn't want it to end, Gomez Pugh's voice well (fanning myself) smoking hot, the story was really good I love supernatural science fiction and this didn't disappoint, would I listen to the next book you bet

Good Things to Come from this Series.

What did you like best about Among the Living? What did you like least?

3 1/2 stars.

This Audio Book "read" like a short story. It was not great but not bad either. A very good back drop to what I can tell will be an interesting series.This book wasn't long enough to get me invested in the characters. But at the same time, I do want to know where all the relationships and the stories are going to lead.

I felt like this was like the poor man's version of the 'Pindone Files' by Ann Somerville. Which I loved, but also was not spread out over multiple books in a series like this is.

In "short" this was a fast m/m read(listen) with some surprisingly fantastic female characters (which shocked me for an m/m story)

The big win with this audio was the amazing narrator. I can't say enough about Gomez Pugh and his fantastic portrayal of Vic and Jacob. Pure Perfection.

No. This was my first book narrated by Gomez and he was amazing. This book would not have held on it's own if I was reading it. Gomez Pugh is undeniable Victor Bayne.

Great Series

I am a long time fan of this series. There seven books and a bunch of free stories associated with it; and it is not over. So I was thrilled to see it come to Audible. Victor and Jacob are one of my favorite couples in mm romance. The world building of this series is great and Vic is a very unique character. The series is told from Vic's POV and mostly in his head; he has a very warped view of himself and the world. His romance is definitely not lovey dovey, but more of a series of mysteries he and Jacob tackle together; sort of like the Adrien English books by Josh Lanyon. It is a great ride and the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is I'm not a fan of the slow burn of the romance. I mean it is really slow; over several books slow. However, definitely worth a credit to start the journey.

Gomez Pugh rocks these characters

I love this series and Pugh does it justice. He brings every character to life vividly. can't wait to hear his version of Crash.

Book 1, Victor Blayne series, recommended

I am not into creepy but this series was recommended by another reviewer in a review of a Josh Lanyon ebook/audiobook. This author, Jordan Castillo Price, this series, Victor Blayne. It was creepier than I expected (remember, I have a low creep factor threshhold). The characters were each unique and interesting. Some I liked immediately. Victor Blayne grew on me.

I had to stop part way through, take a one day break to steel myself for the ending I foresaw coming. I finally was ready and finished the book. It is really good. It would make a terrific TV series, if they would do one about a gay psychic cop in Las Vegas on broadcast or cable TV. It will have to be an independent production for streaming. It is that good.

Not sure if I could watch. With that darn low creep factor threshold of mine, viewing the psychic monsters might freak me out so bad that I would have nightmares for weeks. It happened once when I was a child.

Different type of mystery book for me than usual (the psychic monster, not the gay relationship). It was very very good. Good detective work by Blayne.

Gritty romance with a great crime plot! Loved it!!

Great story to start off a series. I loved the world-building, which I thought showed a very original perspective on psychics, supernatural powers and demons. It’s actually written in quite a gritty, almost “realistic” way. Taking the wonder and romance out of it almost, and making the universe of the book at once rather dark, threateningly mysterious and mundane. I was intrigued by the idea of pairing “regular” cops with the psycops, and the (ab)use of drugs to help the psycops deal with their abilities.

I really enjoyed the mystery of the serial killer case, which wasn’t easily solved. As we near its conclusion, and Vic and his friends get closer to the killer, things get incredibly intense. Especially while listening to the audiobook of the story. There’s such a sense of urgency and impending disaster… my heart almost couldn’t take the suspense. Very well-written!!
Jacob and Vic have only just started falling for each other and are still in the early days of their relationship, but I have a feeling it’s going to be epic. Loved the final scene so so much!

Narrator: I think Gomez Pugh did an amazing job and really set the mood brilliantly for the story. Outstanding performance, great voices for all the characters, including the women, which isn’t always easy for a male narrator to get right. Pacing and intonation were spot on, really adding to the tension of the more suspenseful scenes in the best way.

I have a new favorite m/m author.

I didn't know what to think starting this series as i always found the m/m genre sorta tricky and difficulty to get into as i noticed a lot of authors cant seem to figure out how to balance the sexy stuff and still give you a story to keep you invested and wanting to know more.

I really like the balance with this book. I found myself really wanting to know more about this world and thr characters. The sexy stuff is sprinkled in the story in a way to help keep attention and build up romance between the characters.
Definitely now going to likely read the rest of this series.
