Hallie Knight is summoned to a historic seaport town by Nicholas Trench, the critically ill grandfather of her former college roommate. Months earlier, Trench's granddaughter Susan mysteriously disappeared from his home and all attempts to learn her fate have failed. He feels that if anyone can find Susan, it will be this woman who was his granddaughter's closest friend.

IIf Hallie is to succeed, though, it won't be with the help of the suspicious relatives who surround the old man. With Susan out of the picture, who among them stands to inherit Trench's money? And why does Hallie suddenly feel so vulnerable in this outwardly peaceful seaside town?

An enchanting story, full of intrigue and mystery with believable characters and a touch of historical reøevance. Read beautifully.

Enchanting story

no romance, no murder, really not even a mystery, really just kinda blah. But the narration was pretty good

Lame

I've always been a fan of Phyllis Whitney for many years. she always seems to end with a twist in her plots which I like.

good read

I discovered Phyllis A. Whitney in my teens, and absolutely adored books like The Singing Stones, Rainbow In The Mist, and Silverthorn. This book had none of the mystery and intrigue, or the danger to the heroine, that typifies Phyllis A. Whitney's better books. The story did not hold together well. The characters were very stilted with each other, and nothing came across as natural conversation or relationships. And I was deeply disappointed by Susan Erickson's performance. Normally she's absolutely wonderful. I will buy anything she narrates...except I will never listen to this book again. It must have been one of her first attempts at doing voice narration. There was none of the personality she's so well known for. Most of the sentences were very wooden, without emphasis, even when the characters were speaking. There was no drama in her voice, and as a result there was no drama to the story. I recommend you avoid this book in favor of other Phyllis A. Whitney books that are considerably better, and other Susan Erickson renditions that are far-superior to this one.

Horrible book, substandard performance.
