Resumen del Editor

An entertaining and eye-opening biography of America's most memorable first daughter

From the moment Teddy Roosevelt's outrageous and charming teenage daughter strode into the White House—carrying a snake and dangling a cigarette—the outspoken Alice began to put her imprint on the whole of the twentieth-century political scene. Her barbed tongue was as infamous as her scandalous personal life, but whenever she talked, powerful people listened, and she reigned for eight decades as the social doyenne in a town where socializing was state business. Historian Stacy Cordery's unprecedented access to personal papers and family archives enlivens and informs this richly entertaining portrait of America's most memorable first daughter and one of the most influential women in twentieth-century American society and politics.

Interesting but sometimes infuriating

I have always admired Alice Roosevelt Longworth for her superb education and her work for women's rights. As a lifelong Democrat, however, I grew very tired of the passages praising what she did for the Republican Party. My other problem is with the narrator: she has a clear, pleasant voice, but mis-pronounces many words and names. The one that bothered me most was the poet William Butler YEETS (in her pronunciation). Somebody should have listened critically to the whole book and asked for corrections before it was released.

Cigarette and pet garter snake in her purse..

..while her Father was President.. Alice has a big personality, was ahead of her time..not quite Victorian Era, but ahead of Bright Young Things..

This is a solid biography, not a "historical fiction". Definitely worth a listen, good reader and a solid well researched book presented in solid narrative. I enjoyed the later life being so well detailed. I had no knowledge of her before this, she was an amazing woman.

Unlike some reviewers, I did not feel the book was politically biased. there were a few spots where it seemed that today's norms for women were being applied, missing a little of the nuance of earlier societies. But Alice was ahead of her time.

Amazing Stateswoman and our first Princess

This is a well researched and informative narrative on an incredible life well lived. The narrator chosen really brings Alice to life with her upper crust east coast accent when speaking for Alice. Highly recommended
