How could a good photo-op go so wrong?
A perfect time-lapse of the lunar eclipse should have earned Alan some cash and acclaim. Instead, he came home with an invader in his dreams and a terrible feeling of being watched. Now his life is a tangle of cults, mysterious white-suited visitors, and scheming shadows.
Overnight, Alan's finely trained eye has gone from spotting photo-ops of local celebrities to unraveling a political plot that could shift the balance of light and darkness. Surviving the next few days will take teamwork, guile, and an awful lot of coffee.

It is not your typical Urban Fantasy, but don't let that stop you. I've listened to it several times. I'm obsessed!
No spoilers.
However, it took me a couple of chapters to get into the story. It’s a slow start, but worth a listen. Once you meet Blot, my favorite character, you’ll be hooked.
Alan is a freelance photographer and works hard to keep his bills paid. One night while photographing an eclipse, a Shade replaces his shadow. Shades are sentient shadows and they have an agenda. The Shade’s plan is fascinating and terrifying!
Alan is a goody-two-shoes and that can be a little annoying, but it is who he is. The supernatural problems he faces challenge his sense of morality. There are a lot of character and plot conflicts in book one. Now that Alan has a Shade, he is not safe. There are people who want Alan and Blot dead. The ordinary world is gone, and Alan has to live with his new reality… or die to escape it.
Alan has no magical abilities (you learn this in the opening chapters). This sets the story apart from other novels in the same sub-genre. Alan is an everyday person and suddenly has to contend with the supernatural world. He’s not a Chosen One or someone with hidden supernatural abilities. Blot has supernatural abilities, but Alan is very much so a regular human. I think that makes the challenges Alan faces harder, because he is relying on his human skills, ingenuity, and courage. Blot is with him, but she can’t do everything. They have to learn to work together if they want to live. Will they figure it out in time to save their lives?
