In the novel, A Ring Doesn’t Make the Marriage, Cashmere Summers marries without thinking about who she is marrying. The feelings she has one day are not the same feelings she has the next day. In the beginning of her marriage, she is without heartache. Then one day her husband, Geronimo, leaves and never comes home again. Anxiously, she tries to reconcile her desperate heart with her head. Besides that, one of the worse days Cashmere has is when Geronimo passes by her without saying one word.
Despite Cashmere’s worries, she is a romanticist. She wants her daughter, Jasmine, to marry and settle down in the small town where she was born. Jasmine’s first love is basketball. Marriage is second. Twists and turns make this a captivating, yet tricky love affair. All overlook an essential part to having a successful marriage.
