Abigail Stuart thought she was Jeremiah Calhoun's widow. But Jeremiah Calhoun is very handsome, very alive, and very perplexed. Most inconvenient indeed.

With few options of her own, nurse Abigail Stuart agrees to marry her patient, a gravely wounded soldier calling himself Jeremiah Calhoun. They arrange a quick ceremony before he dies, giving Abigail the rights to his Ozark farm and giving Jeremiah the peace of knowing someone will care for his ailing sister after he's gone — a practical solution for both of them.

After the war, Abigail fulfills her side of the bargain — until the real Jeremiah Calhoun shows up, injured but definitely alive, and wastes no time in challenging Abigail's story. Abigail is flummoxed. After months of claiming to be his widow, how can she explain that she's never seen this Jeremiah Calhoun before? How can she convince him that she isn't trying to steal his farm? And will she find a way to stay, even though this practical arrangement has turned into a most inconvenient marriage?

Narration was really good. The book is humorous at times and at other times sad. The narrator did an excellent job with the many characters’ voices with appropriate emotional intonation. It was a great listen.

This book is about a case of mistaken identity, a marriage of convenience, misunderstandings, nursing, Civil War battles and prisons, rustlers, social expectations, and post civil war attitudes in a state that was equally divided between north and south. The book is told through the eyes of poor farmers and people who did not own slaves but were caught up in the violence between the warring factions.

In the book, characters have to deal with chronic illness and bullet wounds. One character is dying. There is a lot of discussion about living with purpose, letting go of grudges, and giving and receiving forgiveness in preparation for death. The book isn’t really sad, though. It is a very hopeful and sometimes whimsical book with two little scamps who cause a lot of trouble in a hilarious manner.

I liked the way the two characters developed together, but I thought the last two hours kept the “not romance” going too long. The story did make sense, even at the end, because of the way the male lead acted through the story. He deserved exactly what he got. The author did a good job of showing this, but I thought it prolonged the tension a little too long and took away some of the agency from the main characters which in turn made their love resolution anticlimactic for me.

The epilogue is written in a surprising way and made me laugh. I found Regina Jennings a thought provoking, funny, and interesting author whose other books I look forward to enjoying.

I liked this one. I love books with strong female protagonists. It had humor, clean romance, and unexpected twists and turns that kept me engaged, The male main character was not my favorite. I often wanted to kick him in his audio shins for being so flaky and dense. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the book and will check out other books by this author.

Good book

Deftly told love story that shines with vivid characterizations and a smoothly developed plot. Appreciate that this historical Christian fiction was not heavy handed.
The story encompasses the horrors of war and the chaos confronting those who must ajust to a changed world. Broken bodies and minds need time and patience to mend. Hardship is lightened with laughter and the propects of true love.
