Resumen del Editor

Night lasts for days on Jannix, a planet with a synodic day of 16 standard days - 145 hours without sunlight.

The sun is going down for another long night, and disgraced ex-detective Jack Tarelli has been called to the home of an enigmatic billionaire, just hours after the murder of his only son. Led on a chase deep into a city that never wakes, Jack finds himself on the trail of a killer whose motives remain unclear. And as connections emerge, linking current events to Jack's bloody past - a past he's tried so desperately to leave behind - it becomes clear that this case is more than a search for answers. It's a race against time.

Unless Jack can track down the killer, the body count will rise long before the sun.

A Knife in the Dark is a gritty cyberpunk detective novel combining elements of science fiction and film noir in a fast-paced, futuristic thriller.

Thrilling And Thought Provoking

Not just an exciting murder mystery, read in exactly the voice you want for a noir thriller, but a thoughtful and chilling look at the future of criminal justice and science as well as an intimate examination of the human condition. A great listen for anyone who appreciates a great plot, deep thinking, and a double shot Grande whole milk latte of a baritone voice. Excellent!

Great listen with almost zero flaws...

I picked this up on the recommendation of a coworker, and I was not disappointed. The pacing of the story itself is spot on to old-time pulp detective novelists like Mickey Spillane and Dashiel Hammett. There's plenty of suspense, action, intrigue, and just the perfect amount of "twist" that has made me listen to it three times so far. I keep finding nuance I didn't notice before. Well done, Mr. McCullough!

As for the reading, I have nothing but praise for the narrator. He managed to bring life and depth to robots without taking away from the fact that they're synthetic. You still know they're not human, but he makes you still care about them. I was also thoroughly at the way he voiced the female characters. He was able to come across as feminine without having it feel like an affectation.

There were only two distinct flaws that I came across with "A Knife in the Dark". First is that this book is just too damned short. I want more, and if you give this a listen you will too. Second is that I can't find anything else voiced by Mr. Beckett. He truly gave these characters life and personality. I can't wait to see (hear?) what Mr. Beckett is able to do if/when Mr. McCullough gives us a sequel heavily featuring Hennessy (please!)
