Resumen del Editor

Building upon the highly acclaimed debut of Alice Henderson’s A Solitude of Wolverines and its follow-up thriller A Blizzard of Polar Bears comes the eagerly anticipated and electrifying third installment A Ghost of Caribou, in which wildlife biologist Alex Carter encounters an unsolved murder and a town in turmoil while in search of this majestic, all-but-vanished animal.

When a remote camera on a large, rugged expanse held by the Land Trust for Wildlife Conservation picks up a blurry image of what could be a mountain caribou, they contact Alex Carter to investigate. After all, mountain caribou went extinct in the contiguous U.S. years ago, and if one has wandered down from Canada, it’s monumental.

But when Alex arrives on scene in the Selkirk mountains of northeastern Washington state, she quickly learns that her only challenge isn’t finding an elusive caribou on a massive piece of land. The nearby townspeople are agitated; loggers and activists clash over a swath of old growth forest marked for clearcutting. The murdered body of a forest ranger is found strung up in the town’s park, and Alex learns of a backcountry hiker who went missing in the same area the year before.

As she ventures into the forest in search of the endangered animal, she quickly finds herself in a fight for her life, caught between factions warring for the future of the forest and a murderer stalking the dense groves of ancient trees.

Alice Henderson is a Superstar

Having now finished all three of the Alex Carter books I am completely hooked. Fast paced and full of action the books keep you listening but it is the wildlife descriptions that fascinate me. Passionate about the preservation of wildlife and wild spaces, these books inspire me to do more to help fight climate change and save wildlife for future generations. Thank you Alice Henderson. Eva Kaminsky is a terrific narrator too. Eager for the next book.

Awesome book and series!

This book and the others in the series kept me on the edge of my seat and I loved every minute of it. They also had great story lines and spoke of our natural world with such love and caring. It is nice to know that there are others out there that feel the same way I do.

It’s Pie-ka, not Pee-ka!

Being an avid outdoors person and wildlife lover, I’ve liked this series. Some really unbelievable events, but hey, it’s fiction. And Alex is totally badass, not some wimpy woman who needs to constantly be helped or saved by a man.
One thing that drives me crazy in any book is mispronounced words. The pika is pronounced like pie, not pee. The reader got it right in the second book, then mispronounced it again in the third. Hopefully she’ll figure it out going forward.

Get mystery/thriller with a message

Great books that the author builds her plot around the blight of an endangered animal. She also sprinkles each book with true facts about said animal and it’s habitat.

Best book so far in the series

Great characterizations, scenery comes alive with her words, smell of woods, sounds of wildlife, races for their lives. Great story.

Made it this far in the series and soooo disappointed

I work as a wildlife biologist for a living so this series initially piqued my interest for obvious reasons. I thought the first book was really exciting, maybe a little unbelievable but still it worked. There was a deep focus on the species Alex was studying and a lot more about the conservation efforts and why her work was so needed.

Then we hit book 2, which was also pretty unbelievable (why is Alex tasked with covering so many different species? People usually specialize in species, ESPECIALLY polar bears?) but it brought some loose ends together which I liked so I read on.

Then we hit this one. I was SO disappointed the whole time I was listening. The plot is basically a watered down, weirder and less interesting version of the first book with even LESS focus on the species in the title. Every plot point was so laughably unbelievable I really had to push myself to keep listening.

Idk what happened with this book in particular but I think I will have to gracefully exit from this series and not attempt to read the next one. Not worth the credit unfortunately :/

Disappointed on several levels

While I preordered and anxiously looked forward to the arrival of this third adventure of wildlife biologist Alex Carter, I have to admit my disappointment on several levels. The local community distain of conservation efforts and the mental derangement of the opposition is becoming too predictable. While the blow- by- blow description of every conflict reads like a movie script, it becomes exhausting when the climax of the book is bathed in the constant physical violence. And finally, the narrator is infuriating with her constant fluctuation in volume and quizzical intonation.... it was impossible to listen to this while driving as the volume needed to be so loud to hear the end of each sentence- making the beginnings painful.
I did learn a bit about mountain caribou and I enjoyed the description of the wilderness areas but I won't be anticipating future volumes quite so anxiously... especially the audio version.

Hmmm...

I enjoyed the other two "Alex Carter" novels but this one requires a considerable suspension of disbelief. Alex becomes a woman with superhuman abilities in an overly complex story, and characters with illogical motivations and actions. There was very little mention of the Caribou which became a sidebar to the storyline.
But, that aside, this is a pretty good series about the adventures of a passionate wildlife biologist and her loving observations of the natural world. I'll listen to her next novel with the hope it's just a little more down-to-earth.
