Officer Violet Babineaux is called to the scene of a suicide where she finds her childhood friend Charlotte Labarre lying on a blood-soaked couch with a gun in her hand. Violet believes she could have prevented her suicide with a simple call. While placed on administrative leave, guilt drives her to investigate on her own, starting with Psychology Professor Daniel Russo who had an inappropriate relationship with Charlotte, his student. Violet portrays a vulnerable facade to entice his interest, however she falls for his charms. And Dr. Russo's news of Charlotte’s secret diary threatens to blow the case wide open.

Unsure about Dr. Russo's involvement, Violet presents a bold conspiracy theory involving cops to her partner Lenny Blake, but he and Homicide Detective Walter Wild dismiss her despite the evidence. When Violet finally acquires an elusive piece to the puzzle, the answers are far worse than not knowing.

Surprised Ending

New case, new partner. Butting heads from the get go. Det. Violet Babineaux can't seem to like her new partner and it shows. Walter Wild her boss I think has her take a stand to get along just for the case or was her dad whom she has had a bad past with memories of being molested by him which turns out to be(read and find out what her mom says about this)her mom not doing anything about making her relationship strained with her mom as well. That's a drawn out story inside this story and it gets confusing a little. But onward as Det. Violet Shows up to the crime scene has a devastating effect on her. Finding it to be her best friend whom she hasen't spoken to in 10 years. Feeling sick and beside herself Det. Violet is benched from the case she just can't sit back and not take part in finding what happened to her best friend if anything or was it pure suicide? Some claim suicide while others as her self don't believe that's the case. Det. Violet investigates in the shadows. Warned off many times by her partner and others on the force Det. Violet meets up with a potential suspect Daniel Russo who seems to of had a inappropriate relationship with her best friend Charlotte. He is a psychology professor at the college her friend attended. Finding he kept a diary of Charlotte's because she confided in him and trusted him to study this said diary to help Charlotte in some way. Thinking something about this diary is important. Violets dad somehow gets involved and is seen by someone as maybe having information on the diary and is killed because of it. Lost here! (Some places I just couldn't figure out what was happening or happened!?) Later as Violet becomes aquatinted with the professor under cover per say. She finds herself drawn in to the professors charm. Violet's past has taken a toll on her sexual area in life. Still a virgin and never having had a orgasm the professor sucks her in and shows her pretty much what his job was with most students. I'm figuring he was a sexuality or something professor who study's that type of area and teaches that in his classes. Lost here again!? So as drawn out goes Professor is seen as the bad guy in this story by the detectives on the case. Violet doesn't believe that to be true. Professor ends up dead and his sister is left knowing where the diary is and she is gunned down but lives to help Violet get the diary. So much happens and somehow Violet's partner whom she has not like from get go gets the diary or a copy? This diary somehow has information that Violet's partner Det. Lenny Blake wants kept secret. Despite evidence Det. Wilder whom has a crush I believe from get go on Violet tries to keep her safe. She is somehow in danger and is beaten and house broken into. And on an on that goes. As winding down and being kidnapped by(...) Violet finds out why she has feelings she had. While visiting her father's grave after all has been done and case solved Violet runs into her mom whom explains so many things that Violet thought to be which weren't and her mom commits suicide right in front of her in the grave yard. Det. Violet soon finds love in the arms of Det. Wilder. And so much about herself that Professor Russo opened up to her. He was found to of had nothing to do with Charlotte's case of suicide or was murder. All in all it was a very well put together suspense story. Loved the narriation. Such an excellent job. Will find more books narrated by Kaleigh Kirby. I would recommend this book. This is my unbiased voluntary review for receiving a free copy of this audible.

I didn't see that coming!

great story and characters. Narrator played them well and her accent sounded natural. Surprising plot twist. like I said, I didn't see that coming!

Interesting

An interesting plot, full of secrets. When Officer Violet arrives at the scene, finding it was her friend, and a suicide. Looking into for answers she finds a lot more going on with other cops. Well done, and good narration. Given audio for my voluntary review

Violet Has Issues

Abused during childhood, Violet has more hang-ups than a dry cleaner. Yet, she is a young New Orleans cop, out on suspension, yet still gets roped into an investigation into her old best-friend's suicide. The homicide detective in charge and Violet have an attraction, of course, and that plays into the intrigue. Plenty of twists and turns, love and betrayal, family secrets exposed, and hopefully some healing of old injuries. The narrator has a NY/NJ accent that does not play well in Louisiana and can be distracting.
