Tracing Audrey’s last movements, they meet some of the volunteers and refugees—one of whom, Ali, is involved in a search of his own, for a girl whose disappearance may be connected to their investigation. The arrival of Sehr Ghilzai—a former prosecutor who now handles refugee claims for Audrey’s NGO—further complicates the matter for Esa, as his feelings towards her remain unresolved.

Excellent mystery about Syrian humanitarian crisis

In Khan's series I rate this book a close second to the intitial volume, which I loved without reserve. Like that one, this story makes good use of Khan's expertise in international human rights law. It is peopled by interesting characters and emotionaly moving action. I like the increasingly large roles given to Rachel. What makes me give the story only four stars is Khattak's love story, which is developed at far greater length than necessary and disrupts the main action.

Mystery series with a human rights focus

This is a great series featuring detectives from Canada. The cases all have a human rights focus and are set within real life global conflicts. This one deals with the crisis caused by the war in Syria.
