As a teacher and father, I wanted my novel, 1% Murders: The Adair Classroom Mysteries Vol. I, to be a coming-of-age, whodunit mystery for young adults. This is a mystery novel parents can enjoy with their children, a book series that will grow and mature with the audience. I wrote this to appeal to all, but particularly fathers and sons, since novels about them are often hard to find.
1% Murders tells its story through the eyes of Ulysses Adair, a freshman at Mangrove High, and his widowed father, Logan Adair, who happens to be his US history teacher. They are transplants living in the predominantly 1% city of Somerset, Florida. Both Adairs live normal lives. They even play guitar at the local coffee shop, Penny University. However, their everyday lives are turned upside down when a wealthy parent is murdered inside their beloved school. Out of necessity and curiosity, the Adairs become a father and son mystery-hunting team.
Because of their love of mysteries, they can’t resist the temptation to investigate, especially when the murder hits so close to home. They are aided in their investigation by Ulysses’ no-nonsense girlfriend, Hannah, and Logan’s best friend, Mangrove High’s bumbling physical education teacher Bob Nelson. Logan and Ulysses tirelessly follow the clues, avoiding danger at every turn, even as they get dragged into a deep, dark underworld they didn’t anticipate.
Who committed the 1% murder? Ulysses’ horrid geometry teacher, Mr. O’Leary? Maybe the principal? Or is it someone from their past? Everyone's a suspect! Hopefully, the Adairs can solve this case before it’s too late!

The mystery was a very definite whodunit. I had my guesses but the ending reveal was well-thought out.
This book was told in two different POV's - by daddy Adair and then his son - but with a single narrator. I think that was an excellent decision since any times, the POV was of the same event, just told with two different perspectives. Holden's delivery of the two Adair men still made them distinct and special. He even managed the chirpiness of teens while still making daddy Adair's voice the adult.
I'm very excited for book two!
Love the Adair boys!!!!

This is the first book in the Adair Classroom Mysteries series. It is a standalone book with no cliffhanger ending. It is suited for children aged 11/12 - adults. There is a bit of swearing and some descriptions [ie. dead bodies] which might not be suitable for younger children.
The story is told in alternating points-of-view - the main characters of Logan [father] and Ulysses [son] - which is nice because often the same event was told through their different perspectives. There is a nice father/son relationship on display - including that they liked to spend time with each other playing music, having dinner, etc.. In addition, it was great to have a good amount of humor and cultural references. Overall, a very entertaining read.
The narrator, Brian Holden, did a very nice job in juggling the teenage and adult voices. He has a nice baritone voice with a good narration pace.
Entertaining YA Mystery
