wrapis somewhat triggering as we gaze upon our towering pile of naked gifts.) The Weekly Sound Off is going to take a two-week break after this, but first, let’s tie a bow on everything we couldn’t stop talking about this week. Shall we?
A most #relatable celebrity moment
For those who hate the sound of their voice, this one’s for you (side note: watch our Audible Questionnaire for why Editor Christina says you shouldn’t). Adam Driver walked out of a Fresh Air interview promoting his Oscar-buzzy new movie, Marriage Story, after Terry Gross played a clip of him singing in the film. In a 2015 interview with Gross, The Daily Beast reports Driver expressed a similar displeasure, saying he didn’t want to hear the bad acting that probably was happening. We’re guessing he’d also disagree with us on the stellar vocal performance he gives in the Audible book, The Theater of War: What Ancient Greek Tragedies Can Teach Us Today.Giving new meaning to hometown hero
LSU quarterback Joe Burrow used his acceptance speech for this year’s Heisman trophy to shed light on the impoverished area of Ohio he grew up in, Athens County. He meant to inspire the kids from his Appalachian community to follow their dreams, but he did much more than that. Another Athens native, Will Drabold, watched Burrow’s speech and decided to create a fundraiser for the Athens County Food Pantry. More than $450,000 has been raised so far, ensuring that people served by this food pantry will have food on the table this holiday season.
Uncanny valley of the dolls
In a premise straight out of PD James, the last children in Nagoro, Japan were born 18 years ago. But instead of a dystopian uprising, they’ve simply been replaced by life-size dolls. While the photos are low-key terrifying (homunculi have been messing with our minds since childhood, OK?), dolls have a long history in Japan, going back to at least The Tale of Genji. And in animist tradition, they may even have souls—so despite being made of newspaper scraps and old clothes, Nagoro’s new residents probably don’t have to worry about being KonMari-ed away anytime soon.RIP Danny Aiello
We, along with one of our favorite authors John Scalzi, were mourning the passing of Danny Aiello, known for his roles in The Godfather II, Hudson Hawk, and Moonstruck, among others. In a tweet Scalzi noted that—in the tradition of many sci-fi writers who give nods to their pop-culture favorites—he honored the actor in his epic The Interdependency Series, naming a noble house after him. Before we say a full farewell to 2019

Those of us who love adding hot chilies to everything we eat received some (cautiously) good news this week. A new study suggests that eating chilies at least four times a week could significantly reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. This should hopefully bring some small measure of joy to some of the tortured members of the underground chili world featured in our audio documentary It Burns.More red-hot tidbits 🌶️🌶️

- It's officially Star Wars-o-clock: Episode IX is finally here!!
- We always thought the unmade screenplay by Editor Courtney's dad (RIP) would be our favorite The Master and Margarita adaptation...until we heard about the one by Baz Luhrmann.
- Chuy Bravo left us too soon, but we'll be taking his little nuggets of wisdom into the new year.
- Yep, we did it: we asked Lindy West about Cancel Culture and the astrology craze.

Beloved stage and screen actor Danny Aiello’s big-hearted memoir reveals a man of passion, integrity, and guts - and lays bare one of the most unlikely success stories ever told. Danny Aiello admits that he backed into his acting career by mistake. That’s easy to see when you begin at the beginning: Raised by his loving and fiercely resilient mother in the tenements of Manhattan and the South Bronx, and forever haunted by the death of his infant brother, Danny struggled early on to define who he was and who he could be.

Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

To the select fraternity of men who have won the Heisman Trophy since its inception in 1935, the award is so much more than just a football trophy. The Heisman is a national symbol of collegiate football experience and competitiveness. Over time, it has become the single most celebrated individual award in all of American sports. Although the Heisman Trophy is old, it does not age. If anything, its impact gets stronger every year. No other individual award captures the country’s imagination like the Heisman does.
