Whose voice
should tell a memoir? Right now I’m reading the top secret manuscript of an unpublished memoir so brand new that it exists only as a sheaf of looseleaf printer paper, the pages held together with an enormous binder clip. Soon Audible will be turning this memoir into an audiobook, and we can’t stop talking about who should narrate. Should we cast an actor with voiceover chops? Or should we go with the author herself?? It’s a very special memoir that I have a lot of love for (I can’t wait to tell you more!), so we really want to get it right.I can think of times when an author has narrated their memoir with brilliant success (looking at you, Trevor Noah), and other times when it, ah, wasn’t necessarily such a good idea…(names redacted to protect the innocent!). But I want to know what you think—whose voice do *you* think should tell a memoir? Come find me on twitter @rach_smalls and let me know!

Historia
During 1954-1955, John F. Kennedy, then a US senator, chose eight of his historical colleagues to profile for their acts of astounding integrity in the face of overwhelming opposition. These heroes include John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster, Thomas Hart Benton, and Robert A. Taft. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1957, Profiles in Courage - now reissued, featuring a new introduction by Caroline Kennedy as well as Robert Kennedy's foreword written for the memorial edition of the volume in 1964 - resounds with timeless lessons.

What to expect when you're expecting a presidential run
We here at Audible love a good trend, and have tuned into one particularly quirky subgenre: the political memoir that comes before a presidential bid. With a new election cycle just around the corner, we found ourselves wondering where this bookish fad started—John McCain and Barack Obama both penned memoirs before their 2008 runs, but were they the first? As it turns out, then-Senator John F. Kennedy’s Profiles in Courage seems to have launched the trend in 1955. And, as you’ll see, it was far from the last!

In 2005, Kerri Rawson opened the door of her apartment to greet an FBI agent who shared the shocking news that her father had been arrested for murdering 10 people, including two children. That’s also when she first learned that her father was the notorious serial killer known as BTK, a name he’d given himself that described the horrific way he committed his crimes: Bind, torture, kill.

How to survive when your dad is a serial killer
Kerri Rawson’s life was turned upside down in 2005 when her seemingly average father was arrested as the BTK killer, a notorious serial murderer who terrorized Kansas. As she puts it, he was a family man and he would commit these murders, and then he would come home and have dinner with us.
Kerri recently came into Audible Studios to talk to editor Kat about her best-selling new memoir, A Serial Killer’s Daughter, why writing it felt harder than going to Mordor in Lord of the Rings, and how she hopes her story can help other trauma survivors heal.

Historia
Earlier this year, Tony Hendra’s memoir, Father Joe: The Man Who Saved My Soul, spent 13 weeks on the New York Times best seller list. The book detailed his life as a comedian who launched the careers of John Belushi and Chevy Chase and helped create such cult classics as This Is Spinal Tap while he struggled with inner demons including alcohol and drug abuse. But there was a glaring omission in his supposed tell-all confessional: his sexual abuse of his daughter, Jessica Hendra, when she was a young girl.

Historia
The relationship between Freddie Mercury and Jim Hutton evolved over several months in 1984 and 1985. Even when they first slept together, Hutton had no idea who Mercury was, and, when the star told him his name, it meant nothing to him. Hutton worked as a barber at the Savoy Hotel and retained his job and his lodgings in Sutton, Surrey, for two years after moving in with Mercury. He was never fully assimilated into Mercury's jet-setting lifestyle, but, from 1985 until Mercury's death in 1991, he was closer to him than anyone and knew all Mercury's closest friends.

The Unwinding of the Miracle is the story of a vigorous life refracted through the prism of imminent death. When she was first diagnosed, Julie Yip-Williams sought clarity and guidance through the experience and, finding none, began to write her way through it - a chronicle that grew beyond her imagining.
