Trick-or-treating
is all about maximizing profits. At least, it was to me when I was a kid. Each Halloween, at the first sign of dusk, my brothers and would I costume up, grab empty pillowcases, and don our roller blades before heading out. The wheels were key: it meant we could minimize travel time between suburban homes, leading to more sugar-laden loot. And because my mom is awesome, each of us had amazing costumes—oftentimes handmade ones. She helped me become Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sting from professional wrestling (face makeup and all), and the grim reaper—complete with a wooden scythe courtesy of my woodworker father. This went on well into my teen years (no shame). And each year, we collected as many compliments on our costumes as we did candy. So while your kids are sorting their hard-won treats this year, why not treat them to a spooky listen—or three? I’ve handpicked some great family-friendly choices below, including a brand-new one from the legendary R.L. Stine (!) who I recently had the chance to interview (!!). Spoiler alert: he’s still an awesome writer, and one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.
Happy Halloween!

Camp Red MOOOooon…
I was raised on Goosebumps, so Camp Red Moon is a listen I’ve been looking forward to for some time—and the R.L. Stine-curated collection stands at the head of the pack of scary stories for kids. All four stories harken back to classic scary tales, but each has a fun twist that’ll keep listeners guessing. Stine himself wrote the first of the four parts—a campfire tale—complete with a full cast, crackling logs, eerie sound effects, and all the right beats to keep you and your kids on edge. This is a fantastic all-ages listen to get into the Halloween spirit.

Historia
The Claxton Lore and Apparition Warehouse is located on a remote private property in the deep swamps of Louisiana, and overseen by a robot designed by Mr. Claxton, called CLAW. The warehouse is filled with a maze of crates labeled with things like The Beast, Mr. Mason’s Jars, Snap, The Atomic Ants, which are filled with the things of legend, and it is CLAW’s job to make sure the objects don’t get out. But CLAW is a curious robot, and what lay inside these crates just may make their way out and haunt the imaginations of listeners everywhere.

THE CLAWWW!
Meet The Claw, a giant, crane-game-like hand with an eyeball in its palm. The Claw is the “protector” of countless dangerous objects housed within a giant warehouse, but his relentless curiosity gets the better of him and he begins to open the boxes he’s been tasked to protect. This sets up the premise for seven pleasantly unsettling stories oozing to the brim with laughs and chills. As the stories of each item unfold, The Claw’s commentary recalls the best moments of Mystery Science Theater 3000—but with a more lovable bent than the hosts of the classic show. This weird, scary, funny, memorable listen is a cross between The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt that’s perfect for you and the kids in your life. (THE CLAW!!!)

Wonderful. But Keep In Mind...

Vampire-rabbits are the best rabbits
Bunnicula was—by far—my favorite scary book when I was a kid. Stumbling upon the Howes’ classic tale of a vegetable-draining bunny was life-changing for me. I’d always loved small animals—having had gerbils and hamsters and a rabbit in my pre-teen years—so the idea of a wily dog and his kitty companion investigating a Dracula-esque rabbit? It was music to my ears. And to my great, nostalgia-sating joy, the audiobook installments are both masterfully narrated and every bit as enjoyable as when I first encountered Bunnicula as a kid. Even better: this listen includes the first three titles in the series!

Liberty Johansen is going to change the way we look at the night sky. Most people see the old constellations, the things they've been told to see. But Liberty sees new patterns, pictures, and possibilities. She's an exception. Some other exceptions: Her dad, who gave her the stars. Who moved out months ago and hasn't talked to her since. Her mom, who's happier since he left, even though everyone thinks she should be sad and lonely. And her sister, who won't go outside their house.
