Why does
Veterans Day feel solemn and a little formal? I think it’s because civilians (like me) want veterans to know we’re really, truly grateful for their service, as we should be. But Veterans Day isn’t Memorial Day; vets who survived their military service walk among us, and their experience isn’t only military! As the NCOIC (non-commissioned officer in charge) of Audible History, I give my fellow civilians permission to speak freely to vets and to honor their service by embracing all the emotions—yours and theirs—that accompany veterans' stories. If you are a vet reading this, or a close family member of a vet, then...thank you for your service, on behalf of the Audible Editors. We're grateful for all the stories you’ve shared and all the stories you’re not ready to share, yet. Most of all, enjoy your day!
At ease, everyone, and good listening.

Historia
Updated with a new preface by the author, this captivating biography of America’s 40th president recounts Ronald Reagan’s life - from his poverty-stricken Illinois childhood to his acting career to his California governorship to his role as commander in chief - and examines the powerful myths surrounding him, many of which he created himself. Praised by some for his sunny optimism and old-fashioned rugged individualism, derided by others for being a politician out of touch with reality, Reagan was both a popular and polarizing figure in the 1980s United States.
A listen worth the wait
On our list of presidents who served, Ronald Reagan stands out as one who never saw active combat. More substantively, Reagan’s presidency was unique for all the reasons explored in Garry Wills’s nuanced, insightful, and *finally* available in audio Reagan’s America: Innocents at Home. Wills published this book in print in 1987, just before the Iran-Contra scandal broke; in The New York Times, C. Vann Woodward—America’s foremost historian—called it a remarkable and even-handed study.
With the benefit of time and hindsight, contemporary listeners will observe that many of Wills’s warnings about our national character still apply today. Incidentally, Garry Wills won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction in 1993 for Lincoln at Gettysburg, securing his place in the pantheon of American historians.

Historia
During the course of a career that began in the late 1940s, Lenny Bruce challenged the sanctity of organized religion and other societal and political conventions; he widened the boundaries of free speech. Critic Ralph Gleason said, "So many taboos have been lifted and so many comics have rushed through the doors Lenny opened. He utterly changed the world of comedy". Although Bruce died when he was only 40, his influence on the worlds of comedy, jazz, and satire are incalculable.

Do world wars have a lighter side?
Maybe in retrospect, they do. The novelist Nelson DeMille served in Vietnam from 1966–1969, was highly decorated, and included this joke at the 47:07 mark of Chapter 10 in the The Gold Coast: What’s a real man’s idea of group therapy? Answer: World War II! Thank you, Nelson, and also for your service! *rimshot* But seriously, folks, here are suggestions for fun listens inspired by World Wars I and II.

Historia
The received idea of Native American history - as promulgated by books like Dee Brown's mega-bestselling 1970 Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee - has been that American Indian history essentially ended with the 1890 massacre at Wounded Knee. Not only did 150 Sioux die at the hands of the US Cavalry, the sense was, but Native civilization did as well. Growing up Ojibwe on a reservation in Minnesota, training as an anthropologist, and researching Native life past and present for his nonfiction and novels, David Treuer has uncovered a different narrative.
